About the job

We are seeking a visionary Global Head of Science to lead our scientific and technological initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental science and technology, combined with a proven track record of leadership in multi-disciplinary and collaborative projects. The role demands a forward-thinking approach to identifying and leveraging cutting-edge research and technologies that can significantly impact our environmental goals.

Organizationally, the position is part of a global team that is currently being set up in the Bellona Foundation, as part of an organizational development process. As a senior staff member in a matrix organization, a significant part of the success of the position is to ensure alignment, collaboration and synergies across the science and policy staff of Bellona across all offices. New coordination mechanisms will need to be implemented and followed up. The selected candidate will report to the CEO, who is based in Oslo. This position can be based in Oslo or Brussels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and implement a clear vision for the organization's scientific and technological direction, ensuring alignment with our mission and strategic objectives, as well as relevant colleagues across offices.
  • Innovation Management: Foster innovation and interdisciplinary thinking within the organization, identifying new solutions and approaches that can enhance our environmental impact. Support the development of these solutions, from ideation to execution.
  • Internal alignment, coordination, and quality assurance: Support the development of unified positions across all Bellona’s offices and lead the internal scientific decision-making process. Ensure that Bellona’s publications meet high scientific standards. Establish and lead an internal committee on science and climate solutions.
  • Partnership Development: Actively develop and maintain strategic partnerships with academic institutions, industry leaders, and other NGOs to advance our environmental objectives together with relevant colleagues. Negotiate and manage partnership agreements that facilitate collaborative research and technology development.
  • Horizon Scanning: Maintain an overview of the research agenda for prioritized climate technologies in collaboration with colleagues and key scientific partners. Overall responsibility for early identification of solutions.
  • Representation: Represent the organization in key forums, including conferences, policy discussions, and media engagements where relevant. Advocate for science-based policies and practices that advance global environmental sustainability.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in environmental science and technology, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading collaborative projects across academia and the private sector.
  • Strong network within the global scientific and environmental community.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Passionate about environmental sustainability and the role of science and technology in addressing global challenges.

What we offer:

If you are the kind of person who wants to make a difference in your lifetime, leaving the world a little better than it was when you entered it, working with someone like us might be just the right thing for you.

In Bellona, you will be part of a dedicated group of people working to make a difference by identifying and implementing sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing environmental issues. Our main goals are to combat the climate crisis, environmental degradation, pollution-induced hazards to human health, and negative ecological consequences of economic development strategies.

Bellona's work is rooted in a firm belief that it is possible to address environmental challenges in a constructive and progressive manner, promoting solutions that are sustainable both in an economic, social and ecologic perspective, based om knowledge and science, and that industry and business can be part of those solutions if they want to, as long as they learn to change and adapt to new challenges, and have the right kind of predictable and long-term framework conditions.

Thus, Bellona aims to be a bridge between knowledge producers, business and industry, and decision-makers, working closely with the first to help them respond to environmental challenges within their fields, and proposing policy measures to the latter that can contribute to accelerating the deployment of new technology and better solutions with minimal impact on the environment within the industries.

Of course, the foundation also strives to be a good and professional employer, a cut above others, offering our staff members a safe, inclusive, and inspiring work environment in great premises in central Oslo city centre, with flexible working hours, a generous vacation quota, above average insurance and pension schemes, exciting and varied tasks in a knowledge-based and science-oriented organization, with skilled and committed colleagues and a large international contact network. As well as a real opportunity to make a difference.
