The Project Commercial Manager will be engaged with all commercial facets of the projects from tendering, through to execution.  The Project Commercial Manager may either lead a tender (forming a core team with the Commercial Manager  and Technical Lead/Manager) or be the commercial lead on a project.  The Project Commercial Manager will generally follow the same project through the full project lifecycle, from receipt of tender through to project execution.

On a project, the Project Commercial Manager will be responsible for contracts management and project controls including planning, cost control, document control and project risk and management, with these functions reporting directly to the Project Commercial Manager.

The Project Commercial Manager will either have a commercial or contractual background, typically with experience as a commercial manager, business manager or contracts manager. 

Duties and responsibilities

The key responsibilities for the Project Commercial Manager during the tender phase are:

  • Develop and manage commercial strategy and tendering activities during tender, in coordination with the Commercial Manager and Technical Lead/Manager, to secure a successful outcome.
  • Carry out detailed commercial and contractual review and clarifications of tender, and preparation of tender outlines, including risk analysis, for presentation to senior management.
  • Act as single point of contact with customer and DeepOcean senior management.
  • Manage the tender team and delegate responsibilities for tender input within the organization.
  • Lead negotiations and clarifications with Client in accordance with DeepOcean delegations and procedures, to agree and establish the contract and ensuring alignment with DeepOcean policies and processes.
  • Provide handover and support documentation to execution team.
  • Conduct handover to project execution team for successful tenders.
During the execution phase, after successful completion of a tender, the key responsibilities of the Project Commercial Manager are:
  • Form part of the project management team alongside Project Manager and Project Technical Manager. The Project Commercial Manager plays an important role by being responsible for the contract management of allocated project(s) and oversee the mercantile functions within the project organization such as Cost Control, Planning, SCM and Risk Management.
  • Fulfill the contract management role on the project, ensuring full compliance with contract obligations and timely notifications.
  • Proactively lead the variation management process to identify change, in close collaboration with the project team and through monitoring of correspondence, and subsequently prepare relevant claim and obtain client approval.
  • Foster a culture of commercial mindset, risk mitigation and optimization of opportunity, ensuring all team members are commercially and contractually aware.
  • Support the project SCM team, to ensure that all procurement and subcontracts are conducted and managed in accordance with the project contract and cost control procedures.
  • Ensure that rigorous standards are set and maintained in terms of quality of formal project correspondence and communication tracking, hereunder drafting of contractual documents such as variations, side letters, amendments and addendums.
  • Lead internal and external project meetings and processes dealing with contractual /commercial issues and disputes. Liaise with management and legal as required.  

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferably within industrial economics, economics, business- and/or contractual administration, contract engineer, law or other relevant discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years working experience from contract and commercial management or from a similar role within the oil & gas and/or the renewables sector.
  • Experience from EPCI and Lump Sum type projects in the subsea or renewables industry is an advantage.
  • Commercial mindset and contractual understanding, with a good knowledge of legal concepts relevant to the industry.
  • Experience with relevant contract standards such as NTK, NS, LOGIC, FIDIC and/ or BIMCO is an advantage.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate, along with high professional standards of written and spoken English are essential for the role.
  • Subsea industry experience and/or technical understanding may be an advantage, but not a requirement.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work efficiently as an individual as well as part of a multi-disciplined team.
  • Possess an eye for detail with an ability to produce work of a high standard and accuracy.
