Do you want to contribute to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable use of the ocean?
Do you want to contribute to a more environmentally friendly andsustainable use of the ocean?
SINTEF Ocean seeks researcher/senior researcher in oceanography and ocean modelling.
In the department Fisheries and New Biomarine Industry, the Marine Modelling and Analysis Group has one of its focus areas to model, simulate and analyse the interaction between the physical, chemical and biological processes in the ocean to contribute to environmentally friendly and sustainable use. The negative pressure on the marine environment is increasing due to human activities and climate change. It is urgent to find good solutions, which is why we need to increase our capacity in this area.
The research group consists of researchers with background from physical oceanography, fisheries, marine technology, hydrodynamics, nautical science, physics, and cybernetics. Our proprietary software SINMOD is used both nationally and internationally to simulate ocean currents, sea temperatures, salinity and biological production in the ocean. This is done for both past, present and future scenarios. Models are created to estimate the spread of infection and particles from industrial activities, the effects of climate impact (carbon cycle and chemistry) and for a number of other purposes. The model can be run operationally to provide ocean forecasts for physical and biological environmental variables. We also use other modelling tools that are linked with SINMOD, such as SWAN and NEMO, to increase their use for various problems and tasks.
The tasks are varied and will be within several of the areas:
- Ocean modelling, simulation and analysis that provides important decision support for industries such as aquaculture, fisheries, producers of renewable and non-renewable forms of energy and public enterprises.
- Further development and operation of proprietary modelling and simulation software
- Development of methods and tools for simulation and analysis of ocean data.
- Development of services based on analysis of collected data.
We imagine that you:
- Have a master's or doctoral degree in oceanography, cybernetics, physics, computer technology or equivalent.
- Being motivated by the possibility of developing technology for a better society.
- Are curious and inspired by finding new solutions and answers.
- Is interested in the development of analysis and simulation tools for marine applications.
- Have experience in the use of Python, Matlab and Fortran, and experience with other ocean models such as NEMO, MOM6 or ROMS.
- Have worked with data assimilation from remote sensing data sources in operational models.
- Can work both in Windows and Linux.
- At SINTEF Ocean, we focus on your personal and professional development. You will work closely with experts in various disciplines and become part of an inclusive environment of peers who want to contribute to developing society for the better. You will have the opportunity to become part of an inspiring academic environment that in several areas is leading in Europe.
You will probably enjoy working with us if you enjoy working in a team and are inspired by finding good solutions together.
If you are triggered by innovation and technology done in a sustainable way, you will fit well into SINTEF Ocean.
Welcome to SINTEF as who you are and who you want to become!
Office location is Trondheim. The position reports to the head of the research group. A brief application with CV and transcripts of grades should be submitted by 09.10.2023.
