Despite our recent growth, Aidn still has the feel of a startup.

Our current products have been built from the ground up by small teams of talented designers and developers entrusted with the authority to make their own decisions. To achieve our long-term goals, it is critical that we carry this mindset with us no matter how large we become.

But, as we continue to expand the scope of our efforts, our engineers will be facing bigger and more complex challenges. They will not be able to tackle these complex problems alone.

That’s where you come in.

The best engineering managers are enablers. They function as architects, mediators, recruiters, communicators, administrators, and—every now and again—even engineers. At the heart of these varied activities, lie three simple goals:

• Help our product teams create technology that makes us proud;
• Help our engineers be as happy as possible; and 
• Ensure we are always working toward our strategic objectives.

There are as many ways to achieve these goals as there are engineering directors. At Aidn, you and your peers will be given the opportunity to help define what is needed and to determine how we should prioritise our efforts. But overall, we would expect your responsibilities to fall into three major categories.

Leadership

• Help set the vision, direction, and level for engineering across different products and platforms
• Collaborate with corresponding roles in product and design to set and reach goals in accordance with company strategy
• Collaborate with corresponding roles in product and design to define and implement cross-functional best practices
• Collaborate with tech leads to help them align and take decisions

Engineering

• Identify common struggles, risks, and gaps
• Facilitate workshops in your area of expertise
• Provide hands-on support whenever and wherever needed

People

• Design and implement best-in-class recruitment processes for tech
• Manage and coach engineers of all stripes
• Create a safe and inspiring workplace

Our expectation is the number of engineering directors will grow horizontally as the company’s product offerings expand. The result will be a peer group of highly capable, multi-disciplinary managers across the various technical domains at Aidn.

Engineering directors report directly to the CTO. The CTO is a particularly open and communicative leader, which means directors are exposed to almost every strategic discussion that affects the area. It is a rare opportunity to both understand and help shape the evolution of a company in real-time.

And if Aidn grows large enough over time that this structure is no longer feasible, engineering directors will be the natural candidates to fill any new senior management roles.
