ABB is looking for an R&D Electrical Designer for our business area Coastguard & Navy. As an Electrical Designer, you will become part of a small, multidisciplinary team dedicated to working with some of the most demanding customers in the marine industry. We develop electric propulsion, power and automation systems that will be the basis for safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly operation of various vessels within Coast Guard and Navy. We work with both traditional AC high-voltage systems and DC-grid systems. Office location is Fornebu, alternative Ulsteinvik.


Your responsibilities

  • Participate to definition, realization, and further development of systems including electrical function defined in Coast Guard and Navy Portfolio.
  • Propose, develop, and test in lab improvements for this portfolio, maintain documentations and schematics.
  • Simulate and analyze integration of these systems and particularly on electromagnetism aspect.
  • Participate on tests for standard verification as participate to certification testing.
  • Participate in the preparation of product documentation for sales, manufacturing as certification.
  • Contribute technical support to our sales department, project team and production team.


Your background

  • You have a bachelor's or master's degree in power electronics or electrical engineering, with a few years’ experience ideally in Maritime environment.
  • You have some knowledge on EMC design and testing, as on electronic converter topologies.
  • You have some familiarity with modern simulation tools (SiMetrix, LTspice, Ansys, Matlab/simulink).
  • Your attitude is as important to us as your grades.
  • You have the ability to combine practical and theoretical knowledge.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement, as well as cultural awareness and mutual respect - we have an international workplace and business where we have colleagues and customers from different backgrounds and nationalities.
  • We believe that you are interested in learning about the marine industry and power systems and that you have an interest in new technology within low and zero emission technology such as fuel cells and energy storage systems.
