Job description

Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS).

Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS) is a Centre for researched based innovation (SFI) at the Department of Technology Systems (https://www.mn.uio.no/its/) at Kjeller. The Centre is funded by the Research Council of Norway for up to 8 years, starting in November 2020. The centre has three research partners and nine user partners.

CENSSS will address challenges and opportunities in science, technology and business related to New-Space satellites and systems for Earth Observation, as well as Space Exploration to the Moon and Mars. CENSSS will do this by focusing on novel sensors, sensor systems and services. The centre will address UN´s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as applications of national interest.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Preferred starting date as soon as possible and no later than January 1, 2023.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to three years.

More about the position

Project description:

In order to explore the inner solar system, we need to develop methods to use available resources as building materials, as well as energy, water and oxygen sources. Before any resources may be located, they need to be found and mapped.

To map resources several different technologies may be used. In CENSSS we focus on neutron and gamma ray detection to determine compositions of materials and search for water that may be extracted

Tasks:

The main task of the postdoc will be to develop instrument(s) for mapping of resources on the moon and other bodies in the solar system.

The work will include:

  • Review and analysis of requirements for an instrument or instrument package
  • Development and test of a physical instrument that is qualifiable for flight

The work will be based on existing technology provided to CENSSS by the company Integrated Detector Electronics AS, IDEAS. You will therefore work in close with scientists and engineers from IDEAS to develop instruments suitable for use on the Moon or on Mars. IDEAS has a strong heritage in space borne electronics and IDEAS integrated circuits are used on more than 20 scientific space missions.

The candidate is expected to share his/her/their office time between CENSSS at Kjeller, Lillestrøm and IDEAS in Nydalen, Oslo.

The work will also include the supervision of master and Ph.D. students within this topic.

Development plan:

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan (https://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/postdoc/development-plan/index.html) no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe's leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Must have qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in physical sciences, electronics, or informatics. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment
  • The hiring process is conducted after the principles of the act for state employees (statsansatteloven) and the Act relating to control of export of knowledge, technology and services (Eksportkontrolloven)

Desired skills (not requirements)

  • The candidate should have some knowledge of radiation detection. Experience in simulation of detection systems and radiation environments as well as analysis of radiation data is an advantage
  • We also expect the candidate to have experience in instrumentation and electronics. In depth knowledge of embedded systems and FPGA programming is an advantage
  • Knowledge of instrumentation used in space is also an advantage

We will adapt the work to the skills of the successful candidate.
