The Research Department at the Cancer Registry of Norway has a vacancy available for a Researcher with expertise in molecular epidemiology and/or bioinformatics. Research on early detection cancer biomarkers, cancer causes and epidemiological studies to inform cancer prevention strategies is an overarching aim of our research. The position is affiliated to the Section for Molecular Epidemiology and Infections which is working on identification of biomarkers of cancer risk and early detection and conducts research using large prospective population-based biobanks and cohorts combined with epidemiological data from registries and health surveys.

The Cancer Registry of Norway is a research institution that hosts the national cancer registry, clinical cancer registries, as well as population-based biobanks. We are part of the Oslo University Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Registry is one of the oldest in the world with complete nationwide cancer count since the 1950s. The clinical registries have extensive information on clinical and pathological aspects covering eight main cancers sites. The registry administers the national cancer screening programs for breast cancer and cervical cancer, and a screening program for colorectal cancer is currently under development. It also manages several prospective cohorts and biobanks including the large population-based Janus Serum Bank with pre-diagnostic serum samples from more than 300 000 individuals of whom more than 100 000 have developed a cancer diagnosis after sampling.

Tasks

We aim to strengthen our team with a researcher with a strong background in the field of molecular epidemiology and/or bioinformatics who is interested in working in a multidisciplinary work environment. The researcher will contribute to the studies of large-scale molecular/omics datasets as well as immunological markers relevant for the development and early detection of cancer, and is expected to develop research projects in this area. We are looking for someone with interest in utilizing the full potential of our biobanks by combining advanced molecular methods and different statistical approaches to answer biologically and epidemiologically driven questions in cancer research. Experience in the application and interpretation of bioinformatics methods and approaches is an advantage.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate who is highly collaborative, ambitious and enthusiastic and who will facilitate a close collaboration between the existing epidemiological milieu in our department with the molecular and clinical research environments nationally and internationally. The successful candidate will initiate his/her own research projects as well as contribute to ongoing studies in the Research Department and across the Cancer Registry’s departments. The candidate will be expected to conduct original research using data from national registries, biobanks and health surveys to further develop our ongoing collaboration with national and international partners in pursuing her/his research.

Specific qualifications

Completed Ph.D. in molecular epidemiology or medicine, computational biology, bioinformatics or a closely related discipline.

The successful candidate will have:

Expertise on cancer biomarkers
Expertise on molecular epidemiological research methods relevant for biobank research
Expertise on bioinformatic analyses /analysis of omics data
Ability to lead and conduct research in a collaborative environment and to supervise PhD, Postdocs and master students
Experience in obtaining grant funding
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

The Cancer Registry of Norway – Institute of Population-based Cancer Research is an independent governmental research institution organized under Oslo University Hospital (OUS). The CRN is also responsible for registration of all cancer cases in the country, and for providing the health authorities with scientific information and advice. In addition, the CRN is in charge of the screening programmes for both cervical cancer and breast cancer, and is responsible for a pilot project for a nationwide colorectal cancer screening programme.
