The energy transition is a defining feature of our century. While its direction towards decarbonisation and electrification is clear, its pace of transition is uncertain. As a key player in the energy industry, DNV forecasts the transition and how it will impact the energy industry and the society at large.
The Energy Transition Outlook research programme is responsible for the annual DNV flagship publication - Energy Transition Outlook. Model based, this forecast spearheads the company's research activities on the area. The programme is part of Group Technology and Research, which is the strategic long-term research & innovation division of DNV, mostly internally funded.
With global focus on energy transition and energy security more important than ever, DNV wants to further strengthen our research in this area. We are now extending our team and are seeking three candidates that will have key roles in developing, extending and improving our energy transition research, modelling and outreach, as well as participating in customer projects.
Key tasks:
- Work as part of the Energy Transition research team, to further develop our system dynamics simulation model addressing the world's energy transition, and to develop other associated models
- Innovate and create new energy models or sub-models, continuously improving our work
- Process and visualize large datasets for input and output data
- Undertake relevant research of energy transition policies, technologies, economics and other relevant areas providing knowledge and input to our energy models, including energy security considerations
- Work with the DNV organisation and outside energy experts on technologies, costs, policies, drivers and barriers for energy demand and supply, and transport
- Document the work, and contribute to writing of DNVs Energy Transition Outlook and associated publications
- Present and apply the results of the Outlook in business settings for DNV and stakeholders
- Interact with energy industry stakeholders, including authorities, finance, operators and suppliers
- Work with our business units in commercial applications of our work
Position Qualifications
For two of the positions, a PhD degree in system dynamics or energy systems modelling is preferred, with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience. Alternatively, a Master's degree in system dynamics or energy systems modelling with minimum 5 years of relevant experience is also acceptable. Required skills include:
- Experience with construction and use of simulation models
- Extensive modelling and quantitative skills, and proven data analytics capabilities
- Excellent level of computer literacy, including the use of Excel and STELLA or a similar system dynamics software
For the third position, a PhD or Master’s degree in technology, engineering, political or social science with relevance for the energy transition is required, with minimum 3 years of relevant experience. Relevant skills include:
- Experience in policy analysis, barriers and drivers for energy transition and decarbonization
- Experience with energy security and geopolicy work
- Knowledge and research experience in topics related to sustainability, material constraints, green innovation and circularity
For all three positions:
- Knowledge of and experience from the energy industry (e.g. oil and gas, renewables and power or energy consuming industries like transport and manufacturing)
- Vision and motivation for working with energy transition challenges
- Ability to deliver independent work, as well as to contribute to success as part of a larger team
- Curiosity, an innovative mindset, the interest to learn new topics and ability to develop new skills
- Excellent written and spoken English capabilities
- Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills would be an advantage but is not a prerequisite.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, and appreciation for working in an international environment
- Willingness to relocate to Oslo area (if relevant)
