Do you want to be part of an enthusiastic team providing formative travel experiences? Are you an experienced science communicator with a proactive attitude, eager to inspire action in our quest to lead the way in Expedition travel?
 
To fulfill this ambition, we are looking for highly motivated Science Coordinators to be part of our expedition teams on board.

The Science Coordinators report to the Expedition Leader on board each ship, and to Chief Scientist ashore.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Oversee the onboard Science Program.
  • Work with the Assistant Expedition Leader (AEL) to ensure the lectures, use of the onboard Science Center, guest interaction, sample and data collection, provide maximum and relevant education and entertainment value for the voyage.
  • Give briefings on the Hurtigruten Expeditions Science Program including how guests can get involved.
  • Facilitate Citizen Science projects with the relevant Expedition Staff.
  • Manage the onboard Science Center, service and maintain all equipment and inform the AEL if equipment needs purchasing or replacing.
  • Ensure third party scientific equipment is working correctly.
  • Provide requested data to third party science institutions.
  • Work with guest scientists to provide maximum education and entertainment value from their program whilst cooperating with them to gain maximum benefit to their program within the constraints of the voyage.
  • Take part in training as required to operate, maintain and remain up-to-date with equipment and systems relating to the position.
  • Send end of voyage reports to the Chief Scientist and Expedition Leader (EL).
  • Communicate with the next Science Coordinator boarding either by email or in person to facilitate a smooth and effective handover of the Science Program on board.
  • Deliver destination-specific lectures based on your area of expertise.
  • Enter details of lectures into a spreadsheet well in advance of boarding and send to lecture coordinator.
  • Be fully knowledgeable of the destinations and prepared to give short presentations on points of interest both onboard and ashore.
  • Take all opportunities to engage guests with passion and enthusiasm about your subject matter and expertise, both onboard and ashore.
  • Work with Chief Scientist and other Science Coordinators to develop scientific activities.
  • Assist with general onboard day-to-day duties as directed by the EL.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by EL.
  • Inform the EL if any procedures or documentation needs to be changed. 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree level in science (biological, geological)
  • The working language onboard is English and it is essential to speak and write fluent English (preferably applications should therefore be sent in English)
  • Desirable to speak fluent German, French or a Scandinavian language
  • Successful candidates will be required to obtain the following certificates prior to commencing work:
    • Health certificate for sea (Seafarers Medical)
    • Basic safety training (STCW)  
    • Crowd and crisis management (STCW)  
    • Security Awareness for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STCW)

  • As an experienced science communicator, you are able to explain concepts and processes to diverse audiences with enthusiasm.
  • Not only do you have an enquiring mind, but you enjoy nothing more than sharing & discovering with others, helping them to pose and answer questions about the world around us.
  • Adept at using technology such as drones, microscopes and cameras you can take an audience to explore worlds that are normally inaccessible without them leaving their chair.
  • In the field, you lead by example delivering spontaneous interpretation, leading data collection and yet you know when to let nature do the talking.
