Would you like to know more about the Earth's shape, rotation and gravitational field, and the way these change? Are you curious to experience dark days and the biting arctic wind? Do you want to see the magical northern lights and summer nights bathed in sun? Would you like to contribute to harvesting data essential to the operation of Galileo and other satellite missions? If you do, this position could be something for you!
We are searching for a new operations engineer at our geodetic Earth observatory in Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who would like to join our team of five skilled people dealing with installation and operation of our cutting-edge geodetic instrumentation.
Our geodetic observatory - once fully operational - will be among a handful of the world's first core sites within the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS), co-locating the four space geodetic techniques: Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Doppler Orbitography and Radio positioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS).
The first job challenge you will face is to operationalise our new data-intensive VLBI radio telescopes. This calls for the capacity and capability to understand electronics, radio frequencies, and operational software. It calls for technical competence, intuition and problem-solving skills.
The positions at the observatory are fixed-term positions and are usually advertised for 3 year periods with possibility for prolongation. The normal working schedule is 3 months in Ny-Ålesund and one month off. Travel costs between your home and Ny-Ålesund are paid by Kartverket if you live in Norway. If you live abroad, refunding of the travel costs will be a matter of negotiation as part of the employment contract.
