K. G. Jebsen TREC is a Research Center in translational medicine funded by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation, UiT - the Arctic university of Norway, and the North Norwegian Health Authorities. In addition, the Center is receiving funding from The Norwegian Research Council and Horizon 2020. Professor John-Bjarne Hansen is the head of K. G. Jebsen TREC. The Center has 4.6 permanent scientific positions (professors), 3 technical positions, 1 statistician, and 15-20 temporary scientific positions (PhD-students, researchers and postdoctors). K. G. Jebsen TREC has partners in Tromsø, Bodø, Oslo, Århus and Leiden.

The overall aim of K. G. Jebsen TREC is to identify novel inherited and environmental risk factors and extend the understanding of the pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Duties and responsibilities

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a collective term for blood clots in the deep veins or the pulmonary arteries. It is a frequent disease with severe complications. VTE can be efficiently prevented and treated with anticoagulants, but at the cost of high bleeding risk, implying that anticoagulant treatment should only be provided to individuals at high VTE risk.

Current risk assessment models fail to predict life-threatening VTE at an individual level, even in high-risk subjects. Moreover, the exact molecular mechanisms for initiation of venous thrombus formation are unknown. In this project, we aim to identify novel biomarkers within the complement system of future VTE to improve targeted prevention and unravel mechanisms involved in thrombus formation.
