The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) invites applicants for a three year PhD-position for development of genetic methods to monitor and study wildlife populations. The PhD-position will be linked to Centre for Biodiversity Dynamics (CBD; https://www.ntnu.edu/cbd) at the Department of Biology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, and will follow the PhD-program at NTNU. Candidates should have a background in ecology, population genetics or statistics.

About the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA)
NINA is Norway’s largest applied ecology research institute, with 285 employees. NINA conducts research within the natural and social sciences that are related to the interactions between humans and nature. NINA seeks to conduct both basic and applied research of very high quality and of high relevance for real world application. The main office of NINA is in Trondheim, and there are research units also in Oslo, Lillehammer, Bergen and Tromsø. The PhD position will be located at NINA Trondheim and at CBD, NTNU.

Job description
The PhD-candidate will work with development of genetic methods and use of genetic data in analyses of kinship and structuring and selective processes of wildlife populations. More specifically, the candidate will take part in developing a SNP-chip for red deer, and use SNP-analyses as basis for identifying individuals and performing kinship analyses for different species. Genetic data will also be used as a basis for studying selection and evolutionary processes in hunted populations, and for estimation of population size using different mark-recapture methods. The research activity of the PhD is directly related to highly relevant topics for population monitoring, management and research of harvested wildlife populations.

The PhD-candidate is expected to take part in both lab work as well as relevant field activity.

A 3–6 months scientific visit abroad might be arranged during the PhD period.

Qualifications
• The applicant should have a MSc, or equivalent, in biology, ecology, genetics or related fields with a grade of B or better. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must be able to document an equally good academic foundation
• The applicant is expected to document good knowledge in genetics and molecular ecology
• The applicant should have knowledge in statistical analysis of data, and preferable experience with the statistical software R
