About the position:

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has a vacancy for a 3-year postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral position is funded through the EU project Face-IT (The future of Arctic coastal ecosystems - Identifying transitions in fjord systems and adjacent coastal areas), which aims to: enable adaptive co-management of social-ecological fjord systems in the Arctic in the face of rapid cryosphere and biodiversity changes.

The project has 14 partners and is led by the University of Bremen. The work conducted by IMR within the project is multi-disciplinary with a main research focus on the Porsangerfjord in northern Norway. More specifically, the postdoc will focus on both observations and modeling, from the collection of observations and participation in research cruises (WP1-keydrivers), via analysis of new and historical observational data series (WP2-Biodiversity) to modeling of the Porsangerfjord in present and future climate (WP3 Ecosystem modeling). Thus the work comprises collection and work-up of biological samples, statistical analysis and ecosystem modeling.

Area of research:

The postdoc position is in the Ecosystem Processes research group, working on research, monitoring and management advice on ecosystem structure, function and dynamics, including climate change effects and impacts of human activities, using both empirical and ecosystem modelling approaches.

The position is based in Bergen. However, the work is highly trans-disciplinary and collaboration across research groups at the institute and with project partners nationally and internationally is a necessity.

Furthermore, the position represents an excellent career opportunity for a skilled and motivated scientist aiming to be part of a productive research community, and who finds pleasure and inspiration in working at Norway's leading marine research institution.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have:

  • A PhD in marine ecology, oceanography, biology, mathematics or related fields.
  • Experience in statistical analysis and numerical modeling.

In addition, the following will be given weight:

  • Experience in physical, chemical and biological ecosystem understanding.
  • Experience in programming (e.g. Fortran, python).
  • Experience in data analysis (e.g. R, matlab, python).
  • Experience in biophysical modelling.
  • Knowledge of biological processes.
  • Experience in cross-disciplinary work.
  • Skills in written and oral communication and high proficiency in English.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and to work independently towards objectives.
  • Ability to implement and publish research.
  • Ability to work efficiently, be goal-oriented and perform and report project activities.

The working language at IMR is Norwegian, and working knowledge of the Norwegian language is an advantage. If needed, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language course.

We offer:

IMR offers a governmentally regulated salary as 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow.

In addition, the postdoc will benefit from:

  • A challenging, creative, and international working environment within one of Europe's leading marine research institutions that is at the forefront regarding the use of marine observations for the investigation of climate effects on marine ecosystems.
  • Exciting projects in a strong scientific environment.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Public sector occupational pension through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (see www.spk.no/en for more information).
  • Corporate cabins and sport teams.
