Engasjement
Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) has an open Ph.D. position with a project period of 3 years.

The Ph.D. candidate will be part of interdisciplinary research groups focusing on environmental technology, which is a collaboration between the Department of Safety, Chemistry and Biomedical laboratory sciences and the Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Science. Due to the nature of the work to be carried out in the project, the candidate will be a part of the Ph.D.-programme Computer Science: Software Engineering, Sensor Networks and Engineering Computing. This programme is located at the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Workplace will be at HVL Campus Bergen.

About the PhD project/ work tasks:

The number of aquaculture facilities with recirculation of water (RAS) is increasing, along with rapid technology development in this field. Building competence is important to ensure an environmentally sound and sustainable development, while safeguarding fish welfare. The interdisciplinary RAS-EN project will address research questions concerning water quality, optimised operation, and implementation of sustainable energy.

The aim of this Ph.D. project is to compare the techno-economic cost of a grid-independent RAS supplied by different sources of renewable energy, coupled with onsite energy storage and management. The work will assess the balance of capacities for wind, wave and solar energy required to meet the time-varying power demand of the RAS. This requires the modeling and dynamic simulation of the whole energy system, which can be based on both existing software and extensions to be developed by the candidate. The requirements for energy storage as biogas, hydrogen and in batteries are to be evaluated. The complete energy system shall be optimised from a techno-economic perspective, and benchmarked against traditional RAS power supply.

Applicants should submit a project outline of maximum 5 pages, describing topic, choice of theory and computational method as well as plan for carrying out a potential project. The preliminary project descriptions will be used for assessing the qualifications of the candidates. The final project description will be developed together with the supervisors.

A separate application to join the Ph.D. programme must be submitted and accepted within 3 months of starting in the position. The supervisors will help with this procedure.

Qualifications:
  • Admission to the Ph.D. programme requires that the applicant holds a master's degree within computer science, informatics, engineering computing, scientific computing, or computational engineering. Candidates from other natural sciences or engineering disciplines holding a master's degree with a strong emphasis on computing may also qualify for admission to the programme.
  • A master's dissertation of at least 30 ECTS is required.
  • Admission to the Ph.D. programme requires an equivalent of grade B or better on the ECTS grading system for the master's dissertation and an average equivalent to grade C or better on the ECTS grading system for the courses taken in the master's programme.
  • Documented knowledge and experience of modelling energy systems.
  • Documented programming skills such as Matlab, Fortran, Python, C++ etc.

Favoured qualifications (not a requirement):

  • Understanding of techno-economic analysis and optimisation.
  • Good ability in hydrodynamics or fluid mechanics.

Personal abilities:

  • Ability to contribute towards a good work environment and in teamwork.
