About the position

NTNU NanoLab in Trondheim has an open permanent position for a senior engineer within nanocharacterisation.  

NTNU is the foremost technical university in Norway and located in Trondheim. NTNU NanoLab is a cleanroom of class 100-10.000 (ISO 5-7) equipped for nanostructuring and -characterisation by physical, chemical and biological methods. The cleanroom is part of NTNU Nano, which is a strategic, cross disciplinary initiative at NTNU to promote and coordinate research in nanoscience, nanotechnology and functional materials. NTNU NanoLab leads the Norwegian national infrastructure for micro- and nanofabrication (NorFab) and is part of the European cleanroom consortium EuroNanoLab as well as the Nordic Nano Network. The cleanroom is a hands-on infrastructure and is open for students, researchers and industry. 

The engineers of NTNU NanoLab are competence holders for the cleanroom and its instrumentation. We have an international, exciting and positive work environment with good opportunities for both professional and personal development. We are looking for a senior engineer to contribute in our nanocharacterisation area, as well as to an operator service covering both nanocharacterisation and micro- or nanofabrication techniques. 


Duties of the position

Our new engineer will mainly work in the nanocharacterisation area of the cleanroom, which is equipped with several SEMs, two dual-beam FIB instruments, an AFM, optical and stylus profilers, a Micro Raman Spectroscopy instrument and several smaller characterisation instruments. The position will contribute to the operator service for nanostructuring and -characterisation currently under development at NTNU NanoLab. 

The position includes:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Repair and maintenance of existing characterisation equipment
  • Procurement and installation of new equipment. 
  • Our new engineer will give instrument training and user support in addition to administrative tasks.  

Required selection criteria
  • Master or PhD in a relevant field. Relevant work experience may compensate for formal education. 
  • At least 3 years relevant work experience, including extensive practical experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy 
  • Ability to work in a structured, independent, and solution-oriented manner  
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience in method development for SEM and teaching is highly beneficial. 
  • Experience in servicing and maintaining advanced research equipment, including fault finding and diagnostics, in particular on SEMs, is highly beneficial. 
  • Experience within other micro- and nanocharacterisation techniques (such as AFM, micro Raman Spectroscopy, and XPS) is highly beneficial. 
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of other characterisation equipment is highly beneficial 
  • Experience in micro- or nanofabrication is beneficial, in particular related to biomedical research (e.g. microfluidics, Self-Assembling Monolayers, nanoparticle and polymer synthesis).  
  • Fluency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is highly beneficial. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language are expected to reach level 3 in NTNU's Norwegian course within 3 years.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Senior Engineer code 1087 is remunerated  according to the Norwegian State salary scale,?depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
