Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Welcome to the Fellowship Programme

Within the Programme, we are looking for a Civil Engineer or an Architect in the Site Engineering Group (SE) within the Site Management and Building Department (SMB).

Main duties:

The general role is that of a Project Engineer working for and on behalf of CERN. As such, the Project Engineer coordinates construction projects with various stakeholders inside CERN and external design consultants and contractors. The Project Engineer assists and works under supervision of a CERN Project Manager.

  • Follow up the design for new construction projects, in particular:
    • Participate in feasibility studies and preliminary design of new projects;
    • Commission design services from external design offices (architects/engineers);
    • Coordinate the civil engineering design services with those for other items of equipment (MEP building services and accelerator equipment) and submit a detailed design to the CERN users;
    • Take part in the preparation of calls for tenders, selection of firms, opening of offers and/or take part in decisions on designer selection.
  • Supervise the execution of the civil engineering works, in particular:
    • Ensure, in liaison with the appropriate external consultants (architects/engineers), that all new civil engineering surface and underground construction complies with the contractual design drawings and specification documents;
    • Supervise the works on-site, check measurements of completed work based on bill of quantities, certify payments and make sure that costs and schedules are maintained;
    • Organise hand-over procedures for the civil works and follow up any subsequent work required to ensure compliance with the specifications;
    • Ensure that all safety measures are taken on-site in order to keep the accident rate to a minimum.

Qualifications

For this position within the Programme, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the field of Civil Engineering or Architecture and a maximum limit of 4 years’ experience after completion of your degree.
  • Some work experience in the civil engineering and/or building domain (design or construction).
  • Good knowledge of project management tools.
  • Ability to work with autonomy, flexibility and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills, an open minded, diplomatic approach and good negotiation skills.
  • Good knowledge of both French and English. Writing skills in both official CERN languages is necessary.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, we offer:

  • An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months. A regular fellowship duration is 24 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.

This is how you can apply:

Please provide the following documents to complete your application:

  • A CV;
  • A scanned PDF of your most recent relevant qualification;
  • Three recent letters of recommendation (not older than 1 year at the time of the deadline for applications), giving an overview of your academic and/or professional achievements.
    • You may upload the letters at the time of application if they are in your possession. Alternatively, once your application is submitted you will receive a link for your referees to upload the letters confidentially prior to the closing date.
