Data Engineer

Telenor Digital believes that data should be easily and instantly accessible in a secure and privacy compliant manner for our organization and their customers. If you would like to contribute in developing a self service data lake to enable product teams to become truly data driven, you should look no further. We are now looking for a Data Engineer to join our highly skilled Data Insights team in Telenor Digital.

The team's current mission is to develop and operate two important systems hosted in the AWS cloud platform. The first is a privacy management solution that helps Telenor business units maintain GDPR compliance. Work on this is around adding new features to the existing system. The second is a modern multi-tenant data lake. This includes developing a custom dashboard tool, as well as providing infrastructure and assistance to Telenor Digital product teams in building data analytics solutions and sharing results and visualizations with their customers in a secure manner.

You will be a part of a team running DataOps and data engineering / backend development for distributed systems, databases, messaging systems etc. Technologies used are e.g. Clojure, SQL, scripting languages and Java.

• Familiarity with a scripting language and functional programming
• Understanding of cloud based infrastructure
• Understanding of general principles for security and privacy is an advantage
• Fluency in English, spoken and written

Here you can read a bit more about the technologies we use (you do not need to know all of these, but it gives you an indication on what you can learn):
 

DevOps

• We define our cloud infrastructure using Terraform, but Cloud Formation experience is also useful.
• We use Ansible, though Puppet or Chef experience is helpful. Experience with Docker or Packer would also be useful.
• We use Prometheus and Grafana and some AWS CloudWatch for monitoring and alerting
• Git and Github Enterprise.
• Container-orchestration: we use Mesos/Marathon, though Nomad or Kubernetes would fit here.

Data Engineering

• Databases: we use relational (PostgreSQL on AWS RDS), columnar (Apache Druid), and object stores (AWS S3)
• Streaming/messaging systems: We use Apache Kafka and AWS SQS
• Big Data and notebooks: We use AWS Athena & AWS Glue, Zeppelin notebooks (with Spark). Experience with AWS EMR is beneficial, but not a demand.

Programming

• Familiarity with a scripting language (we use BASH and Python)
• Familiarity with functional programming (we use Clojure)
• SQL
• JavaScript, especially the ReactJS framework.
• Java
• AWS Cloud
• AWS security services, especially IAM
• AWS VPC networking and security groups.
• AWS EC2 (EC2 instances, load balancers, and auto scaling groups)
