Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, The Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports has one available position as PhD Research Fellow

The research programme Art, Creativities and Cultural Practices (KKKP) studies issues linked to artistic, creative and cultural practices of relevance to education, culture and society. This includes research into human experience, creation, knowledge, activity and forms of expression, as well as critical analysis and discussion of such human activities and their contexts. The research within the programme contributes to change and innovation in various fields linked to technology and various media, inter alia. As part of this programme, research will thus transcend the boundaries of subject areas and faculties and include a number of different academic, scientific and methodological approaches. The research of KKKP thus takes place at the intersection between the humanities and the social sciences, and may include didactic, subject-specific didactic, reflective, critical, normative, performative, technological, material, theoretical and practical aspects.

The KKKP research program will recruit a PhD candidate with the aim of creating new knowledge regarding the visual arts' and arts education's capacities in relation to sustainable development in the artist's community. Thus, we are aiming to learn more about the artist's and art educator's potential in a modern, continuously evolving society.

We are seeking to recruit a candidate who can explore questions such as (but not limited to):

  • What kinds of methods, practices, and theoretical conceptualizations do arts education institutions require to incorporate social innovation in their practices?
  • What kinds of inter-relationships arise during the interaction between arts education institutions and other art institutions (e.g. museums, festivals) within the social innovation context?
  • How can relationships between the visual arts and the community be characterized from the perspective of social innovation?

We foresee the PhD candidate collecting empirical data in relevant fields such as museums, exhibitions, Community Art programs and other contexts in which the arts, arts education and the community interact.

KKKP, and the research group MAteriality, TEChnology and SUStainability , will provide a vibrant context for the candidate, including regular dialogue with additional PhD candidates. The candidate will, furthermore, interact with senior researchers from HVL and our partner institutions. These senior researchers will be able to enrich and support the candidate's research.

Key duties- and responsibilities:
  • In addition to completing the candidate's own research project, the candidate will complete the obligatory courses in the PhD program Bildung and pedagogical practices , as well as actively contributing to the research group MAteriality, TEChnology and SUStainability".
  • The position's duration is four years, including a 25% teaching obligation. The PhD work thus accumulates to three years' time.

Qualifications:
  • The candidate must hold a masters degree in arts education or another relevant field.
  • The candidate must submit a project description of maximum 5 pages which provides details about the theme, research questions and choices of theory and method for the potential project. This description will be used in order to evaluate the candidate's qualifications. It will not constitute the final project description. The final description will be formulated at a later stage in collaboration with the candidate's supervisor.
  • The candidate will enroll in the Faculty of Education, Arts & Sports' PhD program, Bildung and pedagogical practices . Acceptance will thus depend on the candidate's qualification for general uptake in the PhD program. Generally, the program accepts candidates who have attained the character A or B for their masters degree.
  • Scientific production (e.g. published peer-reviewed articles) will be taken into consideration during the evaluation of the applicants.
  • Experience with collaboration with art institutions (e.g. museums, galleries) and those institutions' interactions with the local, national or international communities will be taken into consideration during the evaluation of the participants.
  • The PhD candidate must have HVL campus Bergen as his/her main working place.
