About the position

This Ph.D. candidate will work in a European research project under the ECSEL-JU umbrella named Arrowhead Tools. The project has 81 partners and is in the area of industrial digitalization. The Norwegian sub-consortium consists of 5 partners including large and small companies as well as a research institute and the academic institutions. The candidate will have his/her workplace at Østfold University College in Halden, Norway.

The project will last for 3 years starting in May 2019 and the Ph.D. research fellowship will last for 4 years from the day of the candidate's employment.

The Ph.D. candidate will work closely with the Norwegian partners in the Norwegian use-case and with selected international partners concerned with the Arrowhead Framework. More about the ECSEL project and the Arrowhead Framework can be found at https://arrowhead.eu


Qualification requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Master's degree (equivalent to 120 credits according to Norwegian standard definitions) in computer science or similar relevant education
  • The average grade point for courses included in the Master's degree must be B or better in terms of the Norwegian grading scale
  • Bachelor degree must be C or better in terms of the Norwegian grading scale
  • Competence in cyber-physical systems / Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Competence in model-based engineering
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. For international candidates (outside of EU/EEA area); approved TOEFL English profficieny test with min score 90 or IELTS test with min. score 7.5

Competence in the following areas will be advantageous:

  • IDE (Integrated Development Environments)
  • Tool technologies such as compilers, editors etc.
  • Service-oriented architecture
  • Autonomic computing
  • Industrial automation

Candidates with some understanding of Norwegian/Scandinavian is desirable, but not obligatory, since we expect close collaboration with native industrial users with varying competence in English.

Østfold University College is also partner in the ECSEL project Productive4.0 which will last until May 2020. During the next year we expect close collaboration between Arrowhead Tools and Productive4.0 and we therefore seek candidates with strong collaboration skills and experience.


About Research fellowship

The fixed term of appointment is four years with 25 percent compulsory duties. The period of appointment shall include three years of pure research training.

Currently, Østfold University College  does not offer a Ph.D.-programme. Consequently, the selected candidate must be admitted to a Ph.D.-programme at another institution. For the Ph.D. position, collaboration has been established with doctoral granting institutions, and the application process will be assisted by the our Research Administration Department.

Confirmed admission to a Ph.D.-programme must be available prior to employment as a research fellow. The final plan for research training shall be approved and regulated by contract at the latest three months after signing the employment contract.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the State Employees law, the act relating to Universities and Universities Colleges and the national guidelines for appointment as a Ph.D. student, a postdoctoral fellow or a research assistants.


We offer
  • Ph.D. Candidates (code 1017) are remunerated with a gross annual salary of minimum NOK 479 600. Depending on qualifications and academic background the salary can range between NOK 479 600 - 523 200. In addition to taxes, a further 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
