Key Information

We are looking for a researcher that will focus on how to apply the emerging technologies in the forest sector. 

The candidate will become a central part of the newly established Centre for Precision Forestry.

The position is placed in the department of Forest Management and Technology.

The stipend offered is based in Ås, 35 km south of Oslo, and has a duration of 3 years.


Main responsibilities

The development of new technologies such as autonomous vehicles and improvements in sensor technologies will in the coming years lead to drastic changes to forest operations and the way information is collected from forest.

The main responsibility of the position is to develop and test new sensor systems for application precision forestry. The work will consist of the technical development of sensor systems that integrates several different existing sensors such as laser scanners, cameras, IMU, and GPS. The sensors will be integrated with the ROS software. After the technical sensor system development, the candidate will be responsible for developing algorithms for analysis the captured data. Finally, the candidate will carry out field experiments with the developed sensor systems.


Professional qualifications (required)
  • A Masters degree in technology (e.g. computer science, mechatronics, robotics, computer vision, or data science)  and a strong interest in forestry or the forest sector
  • Experience with ROS for integration of different sensor
  • Experience with sensors such as laser scanners, cameras, IMU, and GPS
  • Programming and scripting in languages such as C, Python, R, or Matlab
  • Experience with analysis of sensor data
  • Experience with machine learning
  • A strong command of oral and written English

Will be evaluated positively
  • Experience from forestry related project preferably in Northern-Europe or North America
  • Ability to speak and write in a Scandinavian language

  • Team player with good skills in cooperation and communication
  • Good analytic and problem solving skills
  • Strong wish to work as part of an ambitious research team
  • Ability to cooperate with internal and external partners with different professional backgrounds and skills

Salary and benefits

The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as PhD candidate, code 1017, salary grade 54 - 60 (NOK 479.600 - 532.300 per year), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which includes a good occupational pension scheme, occupational injury and group life insurance, and low-interest home loans.
