About the position

This is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position is connected to the PhD-program in Social Sciences. The faculty of Social and Educational Sciences will be your employer.

The PhD-candidate should relate his/her research project to the Department's research group ?Innovation and regional changes' and focus particularly on sustainable restructuring. More specifically, the candidate will be involved in the multidisciplinary Centre for Research-based Innovation ?Manufacturing' funded by Research Council of Norway, industry partners and NTNU, and managed by SINTEF. The Department of Geography participates in this center and contributes within a working package titled ?Sustainable Business Models'.

By help of industry 4.0 technologies in interaction with customers and suppliers, the companies participating in SFI manufacturing have increased potential to contribute to enhanced sustainability of their complete value chain. As such, their efforts will contribute to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The work package will focus on and compare the value chains of aluminum and plastics. In dialogues with the core industrial partners in SFI Manufacturing and support institutions (R&D and technology suppliers), the research of the work package will identify opportunities and barriers and systemize and evaluate directions for sustainable management of respective global value chains. In his/her research project the PhD candidate is expected to relate to approaches such as Global Production Networks, Circular Economy, Sustainable Transition Studies and/or other relevant approaches.

The position reports to Professor Asbjørn Karlsen.


Main duties and responsibilities

The main objective of the PhD project is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Human Geography or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Academic backgrounds in other social science will also be considered. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree. Good written and oral English language skills are required for this position.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years without required duties. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme at Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences. 

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
