About the position

The position is funded and aligned with the Norwegian Research Council Knowledge-building project for Industry - MarCy (Maritime Cyber Resilience). The primary objective of which is the development of validated means for improving cyber resilience of maritime digital control systems and maritime operations.

The secondary objectives of the project include:

Mapping the current state of maritime cyber security and resilience with respect to risks, regulations and mitigating activities.

Develop demonstrators of maritime cyber resilience based on operational scenarios incorporating cyber risk.

Develop and validate means to detect, prevent, circumvent, survive and recover from cyber incidents and attacks toward maritime digital systems and maritime operations, including:

  • Recommendations, requirements and procedures for achieving cyber resilient maritime systems and operations.
  • Education and training programmes to increase maritime operators' awareness of and resilience against cyber risk.
  • Framework for maritime cyber risk management.
  • Tools for assessments of maritime digital systems and conduct of maritime operations concerning cyber risk.

The project is undertaken by: NTNU, Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (Project owner), NTNU, Department of Information Security and Communication Technology, NTNU, Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering, Norwegian Defense University College, KONGSBERG Defence & Aerospace AS, NORWEGIAN HULL CLUB, and DNV GL Group AS.

The position reports to the Head of department.


Job description

The specific focus of this position will be on the cyber security of the INS (Integrated Navigation system) and IBS (integrated Bridge System) of contemporary maritime vessels and to investigate and develop means for increasing the cyber resilience of maritime digitized systems and operations. The work will address both human and technological means. Methodologically, the work will include development of demonstrators and employ simulation, utilizing operational installations of maritime systems, as well as the operational vessels, bridge simulators and cyber ranges.

This work will provide a maritime operational assessment of cyber risks and develop operational tools to make maritime operations more resilient to cyber-attacks on an organizational -, vessel - and individual  level. The research tasks are as follows:

? Assessment of the vulnerabilities and risks inflicted by cyber treats to modern maritime operations.

? Assess the operational consequences a cyber-attack can inflict on the safety of vessels.

? Identify relevant operational scenarios for use in the project.

? Develop and test an initial operational framework including company regulations, policies and

procedures.

? Develop a maritime cyber resilience curriculum.

 


Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree, second degree or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits)with a strong academic background in a relevant technological or nautical field, or maritime administration, with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills. Fluency in Norwegian is desirable and will be considered positively.
  • Experience/skills within the area of nautical science/maritime operations
  • Ability to obtain Norwegian Defense Security clearance

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.  Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Nautical Operations (https://uit.no/prosjekter/prosjekt?p_document_id=505444). 

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
