About the position

We have a vacancy for two 3 years PhD Fellowships at Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP). The work will be a part of the project: GAMES - Geophysics and Applied Mathematics for Exploration and Safe Production, that is supported by The Norwegian Research Council and industry partners. The primary objectives of this project are to generate new understanding and mapping of geologic uplift offshore Norway, new ways of understanding and interpreting continuous geophysical monitoring data using controlled and natural wave-field sources, and to develop robust and accurate methods for 3D elastic imaging of the subsurface.

The position reports to Head of Department.

Job description

PhD project 1: Geophysical methods for uplift studies.

  • Geophysical data are routinely in use to image the earth interior. The aim of this specific PhD project is to develop new quantitative methods for estimating timing and magnitude of vertical movement of the earth's surface by integrating seismic and potential field data (CSEM, Grav and Mag.) with themalchronological data analysis.
  • Various geophysical data are sensitivity to different rock properties that individual provide a piece of the past burial history of rock strata. Result from each of these geophysical and themalchronological data analysis is an important building block in its own, but the interplay of geological inputs and geophysical data only reaches its full value when they are coupled in a joint statistical framework. A natural starting point, adopted from recent machine learning approaches, is to generate realizations or scenarios of burial trajectories that mimic the geological trends and variability of rock physics relations connecting variables and multi-disciplinary data.
  • The expected outcome of the project are methods to predict timing and magnitude of vertical movement of the earth's surface.

PhD project 2: Elastic Imaging in 3D.

  • The main objective of the PhD project is to develop and apply new methods to create images and estimate geohysical properties of the Earth's structure from geophysical measurements at the surface.
  • The project requires development of new and efficient approaches to large scale numerical modeling of wave propagation and solution of non-linear inverse problems.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in geophysics/physics/mathematics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

Other qualifications

  • Profiency in oral and written English is a must

Personal characteristics
  • The position requires a high level of personal responsibility and initiative.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently as well as in team in accordance with the project objectives.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

We offer
  • exciting and stimulating tasks in a strong international academic environment
  • an open and inclusive work environment with dedicated colleagues
  • favourable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • employee benefits
