Job description

A permanent position is available at the Institute of Health and Society for an Associate Professor in the area of medical anthropology.

The Institute of Health and Society, Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, is strengthening its capacity in medical anthropology. The successful applicant must hold a doctoral degree in anthropology or an equivalent discipline and a strong track record of ethnographic research within the field of health, illness and medicine, broadly conceived. We seek applicants with research that will complement the ongoing activities in the department, for instance, within the field of migration, science and technology studies and/or global health. A proven ability to combine theory with engaged research is an advantage.

The successful candidate must be able to engage with diverse multidisciplinary teams of colleagues and students, work collaboratively, and contribute to a positive working environment.

Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in anthropology or an equivalent discipline, and relevant research experience
  • Strong track record of ethnographic research within the field of health, illness and medicine, broadly conceived
  • Documented fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Documented pedagogical skills

Personal skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create an attractive research and teaching environment will be emphasized
  • Ability to engage in active collaboration, also interdisciplinary and internationally

A selection committee will invite a limited number of candidates (?short list") to submit a portfolio of academic work (i.e. up to 10 publications) that are particularly relevant for the position. Academic texts shall therefore not be enclosed with the application.

In the final review and recommendation, emphasis will be laid on skills related to the job description, the evaluation done by the assessment committee, evaluation of personal suitability for the position based on interviews and references obtained, pedagogical qualifications and ability to disseminate scientific knowledge, plans for further research and ambitions for his/her teaching.

Interviews will be part of the appointment process, along with a trial lecture.


Formal regulations

Applicants who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of three years.

Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment, and must be competent in English in the interim period.

The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.

The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master?s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty?s medical school and PhD-program.
