About the position

The Norwegian oil and gas industry is in the forefront with respect to subsea field developments, but new and innovative solutions are still required to meet current and future challenges. To accelerate the level of innovations within subsea production and processing, SUBPRO - a centre for research-based innovation, was established at NTNU in 2015. The centre is supported by the Research Council of Norway and several international industry partners. For more information about SUBPRO, please visit our website: www.ntnu.edu/subpro

Job description

SUBPRO is looking to hire a new PhD fellow for a period of three years, within the area Transport and retention of dispersions in porous media

Produced water re-injection (PWRI) can become a cost-effective of way handling the large amounts of water produced along with oil and gas production. A major limitation for implementing PWRI is, however, the risk of uncontrolled permeability decline in the injection reservoirs. Understanding the behaviour of the water injected into porous reservoirs is therefore essential.

In this project we will develop microfluidic methodology to follow dispersed particles and drops in network structures to acquire new knowledge about transport and retention phenomena in porous media. The work will be carried out at the Ugelstad Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering.

Qualification requirements

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines, and a documented background in experimental laboratory work. Experience within surface and colloid chemistry, microfluidic methods, transport in porous media and image analysis is an advantage.

The successful candidate should be independent and structured, with ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/tools/diploma-supplement_en.htm

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.  Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English(CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

We offer

  • an open and inclusive work environment with dedicated colleagues
  • favourable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • employee benefits
Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years with the possibility of until one year extension with 25% teaching duties, in agreement with the Department.  Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Chemical Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phkjpros)

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
