There is an open position as a scientist/senior scientist on environmental impact assessment and air quality management at NILU- Norwegian Institute for Air Research, particularly focusing on air and industrial pollution, environmental impact assessment and environmental policy support and evaluation. The position is permanent and it is affiliated to the Department of Environmental Impacts and Sustainability (IMPACT) at NILU. The department has the responsibility for research and studies supporting the transition to a sustainable society and economy, to minimise impacts on the environment, health and climate. The candidate is expected to contribute to assessments and policy support and evaluation in the areas of emissions to air, air quality, industry and transport. As NILU is a non-governmental applied research foundation, the candidate is expected to contribute in project acquisition and to support the needs for undertaking various externally funded projects.

The applicant is expected to:

  • Contribute to the department’s research and work on the assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts, with focus on air quality and its impacts on health and ecosystems.
  • Perform emission inventorying and prognoses of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, with focus on energy production and industrial emissions.
  • Apply and develop air quality models for environmental and health impact assessments, to e.g. support of air quality management and policy evaluation, and advice on sustainable development of energy and industrial sectors.
  • Lead project acquisition and participate in national and international projects.
  • Disseminate research results, including peer review publishing.

The following requirements to the applicant are relevant:

  • PhD in a relevant field (e.g. physics, chemistry, environmental engineering).
  • Experience in the use, development and interpretation of air quality models, including for industrial sources.
  • Experience in emission inventorying and preferable also with support from satellite observations.
  • Experience in the use and interpretation of statistical tools.
  • Experience in programming, e.g. Python, FORTRAN, and R.
  • Experience with publication of scientific research in peer reviewed journals.
  • Experience with both independent and team based research.
  • Experience in international research projects and a wide scientific network is an advantage.
  • Good knowledge of English, both oral and written – knowledge of Norwegian is an advantage.

We seek candidates with good communicating skills and willingness to take responsibility. We have extensive collaboration with the European Environmental Agency, national and international research institutes and universities. International travel activities are to be expected as part of the work.
