NORCAP Seeks Francophone Climate Experts

Climate change is recognized as one of the biggest challenges of our time and through deployments of world leading climate experts, NORCAP plays an active role in supporting the progress related to the work on climate change adaptation. The need to improve coordination and strengthen climate services and climate change adaptation in Western Africa is growing and as a response, NORCAP is currently expanding our pool of francophone climate experts

Responsibilities:

As a NORCAP climate expert your missions will typically focus on areas such as:

• Developing climate risk analysis and mapping of risk
• Supporting the development of National Frameworks for Climate Services, and the implementation of these, to strengthen the cross-sectoral coordination and collaboration in delivery of climate services
• Support in developing National Action Plans for implementing national frameworks, including engaging local, national and regional stakeholders
• Providing technical support to national meteorological and hydrological services and national partners in detailing, budgeting, planning, fundraising for and implementing National Action Plans
• Offer support in the organization of donor forums and similar events to increase awareness of the importance of climate change adaptation and climate services
• Enabling collaboration with key government and non-government partners
• Engage all stakeholders, partners and UN and international organizations (in particular WFP, FAO and UNDP)  in country towards the successful implementation of activities aiming for higher resilience in light of a changing climate
• Serving as a liaison with key government and UN partners and stakeholders within the priority sectors for the implementation of the action plan, and of its priority activities;
• Organizing meetings at national level, develop meeting agendas, ensure appropriate reporting and oversee follow-up with national stakeholders;
• Monitor and Evaluate progress of projects and programmes

Qualifications:

• University degree within a relevant field of study (Meteorology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Climate Change Adaptation)
• Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the area of climate change and climate services, preferably within Africa, but as a minimum within developing countries.
• Experience working with National Meteorological and Hydrological institutions, with UN agencies and other development partners would be an advantage
• Knowledge of the national context and work experience from countries in Western Africa
• Experience with networking at senior level

• Working proficiency, both written and verbal, in French and English

NORCAP Missions:

• Contract period: Depends on which mission the person is selected for, but on average 12 months
• Salary/benefits: According to NRC's international salary scale and terms and conditions
