Northern is currently looking for the right candidate to join us as a new team member for a newly established postition as product developer at our company headquarters in Oslo, Norway. The contract offered runs for a 12-month period, with possibilities for an extension for the right candidate. At Northern you will work with exciting and varied work tasks in an international context together with a small, young, experienced and great team of other product developers, key internal stakeholders from Finance, Sales, Marketing and Logistics, as well as internal and external designers and production partners. As a team member you will be given a broad spectre of responsibilities and the freedom to develop and shape your own role. Periods of travelling must be expected.  

Work tasks

  • Active role in the development of new products for our expanding lifestyle product categories within the lighting, furniture and accessories segments. Develop and test ideas from early design concepts via technical drawing, prototyping and adjustments all the way forward to final production samples and production setting.
  • You will maintain, challenge, improve and further develop the existing Northern product portfolio. Hereunder develop best practice routines for product improvement initiatives, configuration management, key component registry and change control data regimes.
  • You will be expected to take responsibility for the quality and functionality of construction and materials for both new and existing products. Selecting materials, production and component sourcing, cost negotiations and price calculations are integral parts of the work. You will evaluate and support suppliers in their development processes.
  • You will take part in preparing product documentation (descriptions, final drawings and visualizations, technical specifications etc), the design of user manuals, safe packaging details and quality standard setting, as well as testing and certification for different relevant standards (CE, EPD etc).
  • You will be expected to work well as an independent project manager on some developments, to keep process control and run ongoing assessment of risk and initiate possible mitigation solutions for the entire collection and ongoing development projects.

Qualifications and profile

  • Your preferred background is a Bachelor or Master´s degree from engineering, technical drawing product design or industrial design. However, experience from a similar role, especially within furniture developement, is considered more important.
  • You have more than 2 years of relevant experience from work with product development or production setting. Experience from, and a strong interest for, work within the fields of furniture, interior accessories products, electronics or lighting products is a plus.
  • You have a strong interest and passion for product development.
  • You have a strong interest for materials, material innovation, construction, quality, sustainability and all the intricate elements of a complete good user experience, topped with smart details and good functions. Aesthetic orientation is a plus and a nerdy good eye and mind for details is a must.
  • You are an experienced user of Solidworks or other equivalent CAD programs.
  • You have a structured and analytical working style with strong operative project management, administration and reporting skills.
  • You are solution- and result oriented, and have a high working capacity, with a get-it-done attitude and an international mindset for setting up successful collaborations.
  • You have excellent English written and verbal communication skills. Scandinavian language skills is a plus but not required.
  • You are happy about life and love working with other people!
