Applications are invited for a full-time, permanent professorship in sensor networks and cyber-physical system at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

The Department of Electrical Engineering has more than 30 permanent faculty members, including 2 professors, 5 associate professors, 14 assistant professors, post-doc and PhD students. The department offers bachelor studies in communication technology, automation and control systems, electrical power systems and electronics, and master's programmes in communication systems and in energy technology. The department is also offering a PhD degree in computer science jointly with the Department of Computing, Mathematics, and Physics.

The Department of Electrical Engineering is active in international, national and regional research, and participates in research projects in cooperation with universities, research institutions, and industry internationally and nationally. The research at the department is part of applied PhD programme in Computer Science (http://ict.hvl.no ) of the Faculty, and encompass the areas of sensor networks, embedded systems, cyber-physical systems, robotics and control systems, and radio propagation applied to the fields of industry 4.0, smart grid, smart cities, care technology, subsea technology, and intelligent transport systems.

The area of sensor networks and cyber-physical systems is gaining increasing regional interest and importance, and has good external funding opportunities and potential. This makes the position an excellent base for exploiting the strong industry contact network of the department. In addition, an important aspect of the position is to explore and strengthen the research collaboration and synergies with the research groups in software engineering and in engineering computing at the Department of Computing, Mathematics, and Physics.

Responsibilities and duties
The main duties of the position are:

  • Teaching, supervision, and curriculum development at the bachelor, master and PhD level, including development of bachelor, master, and PhD project proposals.?
  • Strengthen the research and teaching efforts in sensor networks and cyber-physical systems in collaboration with existing research activities at the department, and research activities included in the PhD programme in Computer Science.
  • Development of project proposals for external funding, and research and development activities in cooperation with external research institutions and industry in areas such as industry 4.0, smart grid, smart cities, and care technology.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a research profile and a proven research track record in sensor networks and cyber-physical systems, and hold a PhD degree in electrical engineering, communication systems, computer science or a closely related field. Furthermore, the following qualifications and activities during the last 5 years will be evaluated (relative to when the candidate was awarded PhD degree):

  • Ability and formal competence in teaching and supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students in electrical engineering, communication systems, and computer science Research publications and results, patents, innovations.
  • National and international contact networks, and experience from national and international research programs and cooperation.
  • Experience with the development of research applications for attracting external funding, as well as leading externally funded projects.
  • External/industrial collaboration projects, collaboration skills, and ability to work independently and as a cooperating member of a research group.

We encourage also young promising researchers to apply. In the evaluation of the qualified applicants, emphasis will be on submitted and published scientific work from the last 5 years. Applicants will also be evaluated against their capacity for dissemination, innovation, and collaboration, as well as their potential for establishing relevant national and international research contacts.

The application must explain how the applicant envisions to contribute to, and cooperate in, research, supervision and teaching in electrical engineering, communication technology, and sensor networks and cyber-physical systems. Applicants must be able to document pedagogical qualifications, such as courses taught and supervision experience.

Lecturing at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is normally performed in Norwegian or Scandinavian languages. It is expected that foreign applicants will be able to teach in a Scandinavian language within 2 years from taking up the position.

Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on personal skills: engagement in academic development, ability to be an inspiration to colleagues, good collaboration skills and ability to build good relationships.

If there are no qualified applicants as a professor, a temporary appointment in a qualifying position for up to 2 years can be considered, cf. University and Higher Education Act § 6-5. For a qualifying positions, documented competence as associate professor is required. Candidates who are interested in an adjoin professorship (Professor II, max 20%) may also apply for the position.

Short-listed candidates might be required to give a lecture in addition to an interview.

Salary
The position is remunerated at code 1013 Professor. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted.

The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations for State Employees and Civil Servants in Norway. Organizational changes and changes in the duties and responsibilities associated with the position must be expected.
