The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor of English at the Faculty of Arts and Education in the Department of Education and Sports science. The position is vacant from 1.8.2018 - 31.07.19.

The subject area for the position is to teach English on the teacher education programmes offered at this university. Currently English courses are offered within the initial teacher education programme (M.A. GLU - fulltime and part time (1-7) & (5-10)) and on professional development courses (KFK Part 1 (1- 7) and Part 2 (5-10)). In addition, supervision is offered at the B.A. level. The tasks to be undertaken by the prospective candidate will therefore include supervision, teaching, course organisation and student assessment related to English language, applied linguistics and methodology.

For the temporary position as Assistant Professor, the requirements are a minimum of a master or foreign equivalent in English language, applied linguistics, didactics, or methodology or corresponding competence within the academic field, approved by NOKUT.

Teaching qualifications and/or teaching experience from primary or secondary education is also preferred as is teaching experience from tertiary education.

The following competencies will also be assessed:

  • Knowledge of the Norwegian education system and Norwegian primary and secondary education
  • Teaching experience from primary, secondary and/or tertiary education
  • Experience of professional development processes connected to the improvement of professional teacher competencies

Personal abilities that will also be assessed:

  • Good communication and cooperation skills
  • Good teaching and leadership skills that will motivate and support student learning
  • An ability to take initiatives and work independently
  • An ability to be organised and structured in a busy work place
  • A willingness and interest in keep updated in their subject so as to continuously improve the teaching of their courses

The appointee must be able to document basic competence in teaching skills or, alternatively, should they require pedagogical and didactic skills related to higher education, they must agree to enroll in a university teaching course. The application should include a reflection on teaching skills and full documentation of academic achievement, professional experience and teaching qualifications.

Use of varied teaching methods is a priority at the university. The appointee must be prepared to adopt a variety of teaching methods and different digital learning resources.

The appointee will participate in the university's guidance and integration programme for new teachers, ?NyTi".

The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English, and the candidate must have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language from the start of the appointment.

The position of professor is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.510, code 1009, of NOK kr 450.000 - 550.000 per annum. In special cases higher salaries may apply.

The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favorable interest rates.

Job description

for Assistant Professor in English

Appointment applies to the whole university. Administratively the position is placed at the Faculty of Arts and Education in the Department of Education and Sports Science.

The academic field for the position is English linguistics and language and/or TESOL.

The appointee shall conduct and administer courses, supervise students and participate in student assessment within the field for the position.

The appointee will be given special responsibility for teaching English linguistics and language, together with didactics/ methodology on the professional development teacher education programmes offered by the Institute.

The appointee is expected to support and participate in the other activities at the faculty and also to accept responsibility for interdepartmental programmes or projects.

The University emphasizes excellence in teaching quality and requires that teaching staff has educational and didactic expertise in higher education. Pedagogical competence can be documented with diploma / certificate from relevant formal educational training related to higher education. Didactic competence can be documented with varied didactic work in higher education. Regulations for assessment of teaching skills are available from the Faculty.

Applicants will be screened by an expert committee on the basis of their submitted CV and other attached  materials. The committee will particularly consider the applicants' submitted scholarly and scientific work and their teaching skills. Experience from popularization, journalism, university politics and administration, and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position can also be considered.
