Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Faculty of Engineering and Science, Campus Bergen, has 1-2 open positions as PhD research fellow in computer science/software engineering on introducing personalized treatment of mental health problems using adaptive technology.

The PhD research fellow(s) will be affiliated with the faculty's PhD programme in computer science (http://ict.hvl.no) which currently includes 20 professors and associate professors, 15 PhD students, and more than 50 master's students. The PhD programme at HVL has a strong focus on applied research, and on ICT as an enabling technology. The research environment has cooperation with many national and international research groups, and with national and regional industry partners. The programme encompass the research themes of software engineering, engineering computing and sensor networks.

Project objectives
The PhD research fellow position(s) are funded by the Norwegian Research Council as part of ICT lighthouse project INTROMAT - Introducing personalized treatment of Mental health problems using Adaptive Technology (http://intromat.no/). The project has a total budget of 74.2 M NOK across 15 academic and industrial partners. The main responsibility of HVL in the project is to provide a modular and flexible ICT infrastructure with corresponding tools that supports the core clinical processes in the mental health domain.

The research will be performed by developing new techniques in the fields of Model Driven Software Engineering (MDSE), in cooperation with researchers from the fields of Interaction Design(ID) and researchers and practitioners from the health care domain. The developed infrastructure will be used both for conducting research with ICT in mental health and as a reference software architecture for development of e-health services. Specifically, the project has the following main objectives:?

  • Establish the necessary infrastructure for experimenting with the use of new ICT for mental health;
  • Establish infrastructure to carry out clinical trials to test new ICT in mental health herein establishment of a high-level reference software architecture for mental health including the description of the interoperability with the clinical support systems such as EHR and Medical Research Databases;
  • Transition of knowledge to the health sector and provide means such that the ICT industry could develop new ICT solutions for mental health by offering domain specific APIs and domain specific development tools.

The PhD project(s) will span one or more of the following areas, depending on the qualifications and interests
of the successful applicant:

  • Software architecture for health applications;
  • Modelling of clinical pathways in mental health;
  • Development of visual modelling languages for health care professionals.

The successful candidate(s) will be part of the software engineering research group at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (http://prosjekt.hib.no/ict/research/software-engineering/ ). The group is internationally active working on model-based software engineering and software verification, and is conducting research ranging from theoretical foundations to computer tools. The research will also be conducted in close cooperation with other INTROMAT project partners.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have earned a master's degree or equivalent in informatics/computer science or in a closely related field, or have submitted the master's thesis before the application deadline. In the latter case, it is required that the master's degree be awarded within 4 weeks after the application deadline. The applicant must provide transcripts documenting course titles and course grades for bachelor and master's studies. In addition, the master's thesis should be submitted as an attachment to the main application.

In addition to the required educational background, the following criteria will be evaluated: competence and grades on completed course work, quality of the master's thesis (excellent grade, equivalent of grade B or better on the ECTS grading system), publications (if any), research and teaching experience, practical software engineering skills and experience. A solid background in model driven software engineering, formal foundations for software modelling and verification, combined with practical software development skills and experience will be considered an advantage when candidates are ranked. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a possible outline (max. 2 pages) of a research plan within their interests for a potential PhD project. The candidate must be diligent and display the ability to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out highquality research and to publish the results in international workshops, conferences, and journals.

The PhD research fellow must enroll in the 3-year PhD programme in Computer Science: Software Engineering, Sensor Networks and Engineering Computing at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and must meet the formal admission requirements for admission into the PhD programme. The PhD candidate will be assigned two academic supervisor(s) at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made and the supervisor(s) will help with this procedure.
