Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports has an open position for a three year PhD research fellow in education with focus on vision for learning and students with vision disturbances.

The Faculty of Teacher Education is currently organised into four programmes and 15 subject sections. As part of a merger, the organisation is being restructured and on 1 January 2018 the faculty will become part of the Faculty of Education, Art and Sport. The faculty has four institutes with staff in Bergen, Sogndal and Stord. The new faculty will be one of the largest teacher education institutions in Norway with around 6,200 students and 500 staff members. It will offer preschool teacher education, primary and lower secondary teacher education for years 1-7 and 5-10, programmes in educational theory and practice, bachelor's degree programmes, master's degree programmes and a PhD programme. The faculty will offer an extensive programme of continuing and further education. Research activity at the faculty will be organised into research programmes and research groups.


The Center for Educational Research is one of six centers at HVL, campus Bergen. These centers represent areas of initiative with a degree that the university wishes to further develop and profile, and they will strengthen the institution as a knowledge producer and as a research institution.

 

Duties and fields of work 
The doctoral position is dedicted to research relevant for the Vision 2030 project SecEd, ?Securing education for children in Tanzania". The SecEd- project addresses how viewing conditions in classrooms and pupils visual disturbances may effect children's learning and ability to pass the final exam in governmental primary schools of Tanzania. The project includes education of teachers, implementation of new knowledge in schools and the curriculum of teacher's education.

 

There is a major effort to offer education to all children in Tanzania, but learning material for use in classes is lacking. The classes are huge, viewing conditions difficult and few children are vision screened. Therefore, teachers have limited insight in pupils' visual capacity.

The position is associated with the SecEd-research group (http://www.hib.no/en/about-bergen-university-college/centre-for-educational-research1/educational-research/seced-securing-education/). The procect is funded by The Research Council of Norway.

The requirements of engagement by the doctoral program must be fulfilled. The project must be developed so that it fits the profile of the PhD programme Studies of Bildung and Educational Practices. Qualifications
Teacher education and a master degree from teacher education, special needs education or education within vision impairment is required. The candidate must have some formal competence on teaching for low-vision students or a course on vision disturbances in learning. Teaching experience from primary school is beneficial.

Applicants must have submitted their master thesis no later than the position deadline. In the latter case, it is required that the master`s degree will be awarded within 4 weeks after the application deadline. Normally, only candidates with master degrees marked A or B are accepted into the doctoral programme. 

A project outline of no longer than five pages must be submitted. The outline must include research area, research questions, theoretical and methodological framework, and an implementation plan where a publication plan is included. The project outline will not be the final project description, but will be further developed in coperation with the supervisor. The applicant must apply and be accepted into the PhD programme Studies of Buildung and Education Practices within three months after the appointment date.

The appointed must speak and write English well, and good skills in Swahili is a great advantage.

The applicant's qualifications will be of great significance and must lie within the scope of this advertisement. The project outline will also be of great importance. The applicant's scientific publication is relevant, and the applicant can submit no more than five publications for evaluation. It is a requirement that the PhD fellow has her/his work place in Bergen during the three years.  

Additional requirements
The appointed needs the ability to work focused and independent. Teamwork skills, implementation capacity and work capacity will be weighted.
The appointed is expected to contribute to the committed research community at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Applicants should indicate which publications or parts of publications should be given special consideration in the evaluation. If the documents submitted are not in a Scandinavian language or in English, the applicants must submit certified translations of these. The transcripts must specify the topics, the course works, and the grades at the bachelor`s and master`s degree levels.

The applicants are responsible for ensuring that all the documentation is submitted before the closing date. It is of utmost importance that all publications to be considered in the evaluation are uploaded as an attachment with the application, since these are sent electronically to the expert panel. Salary
Initial salaries will be offered at grade 50 (code 1017) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale. There is a compulsory 2 % deduction to the pension fund (see http://www.spk.no for more information). The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.
