Role purpose
The Laboratory Assistant / Engineer is responsible for supporting the operational excellence of Gexcon's dust explosion laboratory in Sotra. This role combines hands‑on testing with technical documentation and safety procedures. You will conduct ignition and explosion tests on dusts, gases, and vapours according to international standards (ISO, ASTM, EN), maintain laboratory equipment, and ensure strict QHSE compliance.
The position is ideal for candidates with an interest in process safety, whether you are starting your career or have practical experience. All necessary training will be provided, and a temporary assignment (vikariat) can lead to a permanent role based on performance and business needs.
Key responsibilities
Plan, organize, and launch standard test projects in the dust explosion laboratory.
Preparation and handling of dust samples for testing.
Conduct ignition and explosion tests on dusts, gases, and vapors in accordance with ISO, ASTM, EN and internal procedures.
Operation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and analytical equipment.
Interpretation, validation, and documentation of test results; preparation of technical reports and client deliverables.
Participate in the communication of test results to clients and contribute to technical discussions.
Continuously monitor standard test projects and report any quality, delivery or financial non‑conformities.
Ensure good QHSE practices, perform risk assessments, and maintain safety protocols.
Manage laboratory documentation, procedures, and equipment status records.
Propose improvements to test procedures and provide feedback on updated procedures within Gexcon QMS.
Assist in the development and implementation of new testing methods.
Collaborate with project managers and team members to define testing requirements and support ongoing studies.
Qualifications & requirements
Education: technical education (Bachelor/Master in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related) is an advantage but not mandatory. Degree from a technical/engineering school is valued. Relevant work experience can fully compensate.
Experience: 0–3 years; entry‑level candidates are welcome. Prior laboratory experience (dust, chemical, analytical) or experience with technical equipment is a plus.
Hands‑on mindset – ability to work independently, structured, and safely in a lab environment.
Technical interest: strong interest in combustion, ignition, explosion, process safety testing, and learning about safety standards.
Analytical skills: strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with ability to interpret data and ensure accuracy.
Languages: proficient in Norwegian and English (written and spoken).
Familiarity with QHSE procedures and standards (ISO, ASTM, EN) is advantageous.
Communication & teamwork: excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to build long‑term relationships and rapport with colleagues, clients, and suppliers.
Commitment to self‑development: willingness to learn and adapt, with a proactive attitude.
Formal education may be substituted by relevant practical experience. All necessary training is provided by Gexcon.
