The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) seeks a remote sensing researcher. The place of work will be Oslo or Bergen.
MET is monitoring and forecasting weather, ocean, sea ice, air quality and climate. Results are disseminated to various users through a wide range of information and data dissemination systems, nationally, regionally or globally. Throughout the history of the institute, a main focus has been transformation of research into operational services. Much of the development is done through active collaboration with other national and international institutions. A large part of the work is externally funded. This position is located in the Ocean Department, in the Division for Remote Sensing and Data Management.
The position is related to development and implementation of ocean products based on active microwave sensors, mainly on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Tasks include:
- Development of ocean geophysical retrieval algorithms based on SAR Doppler shift, polarized backscatter and/or cross-spectra from C- and L-band,
- Implementation of ocean geophysical retrieval algorithms,
- Development and implementation of operational processing and cal/val software systems,
- Calibration and validation of satellite products, both level-1 and level-2 products,
- Documentation and publication of datasets, including data visualization and guidance to users.
The work requires good technical and scientific qualifications.
The position is for 2 years.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- Higher education in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics or equivalent
- Experience and documented knowledge in applied mathematical / scientific programming in Linux environment, in particular Python
- Candidates must be able to work effectively and demonstrate fluency in written and oral English
Beneficial qualifications
- Experience with the use of satellite remote sensing data
- Experience with active microwave remote sensing techniques
- Experience with High Performance Computing environments
- Experience with remote sensing file formats like CF-NetCDF, SAFE and Zarr
- Experience with operational systems
- Experience and knowledge in physical oceanography, especially ocean surface winds, surface currents, ocean waves and/or sea-ice.
- Experience with collocation procedures between satellite products, in-situ measurements, and numerical weather prediction models.

- The position is paid in accordance with the main tariff agreements in the state as Researcher 1108/1109, according to qualifications. Salary range NOK 540 000 - NOK 680 000 . Higher wages may be considered for particularly qualified persons.
- A 2% statutory contribution to the Statens Pensjonskasse is deducted from the salary.
- 6 months of mutual probation period
