Diakonhjemmet Hospital is a private, not-profit hospital with defined responsibilities for the health care system both in Oslo, in the health region, as well as nationally. The Hospital has a local function for parts of Oslo's population. Division of Rheumatology and Research has responsibility for people with rheumatic joint diseases living in the entire area of Oslo and a regional function for the inhabitants in the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. A national highly specialized function is organized within the division: The Norwegian National Unit for Rehabilitation for Rheumatic Patients with Special Needs.
The Department has since 2008 held the position as EULAR Center of Excellence and has, in addition to patient care, a strong focus on clinical and epidemiological research, education and information to patients and their relatives.
In 2022 we established the REMEDY center, a Norwegian Centre for Clinical Treatment Research focusing on rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, supported by the Norwegian Research Council and The Olav Thon Foundation. The overarching aim of the REMEDY center is to improve treatment of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases by randomized clinical trials assessing novel treatment and treatment strategies, in combination with research and innovation, to untangle the causes and characteristics of these diseases.
About the position
A permanent position as Senior Consultant (rheumatology) is available at the Division of Rheumatology and Research at Diakonhjemmet Hospital. The position is affiliated with a part-time position as Professor II /Associate Professor II (20 % position) in Medicine (rheumatology) at the Department of Research and Teaching Diakonhjemmet, Division of Orthopedic Surgery, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (UiO). It is required that the position holder attends to both positions.
About the part-time academic position at UiO
The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery’s research activity is organized into 10 different research groups, covering a broad range of basic and clinical research with an overall aim to improve patient care with emphasis on diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive measures.
The proximity to patients and their medical issues are the cornerstones for the research conducted at the Division, the aim being improved patient care. High ethical standards ensure the confidentiality, and our goal is to continuously improve diagnostics, treatment and management for all our patients. The research activities within rheumatology are conducted within the framework of the REMEDY center, with the Institute of Clinical Medicin being a partner in the consortium. Applicants must be well-published in clinical and/or translational research related to rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases and should be able to cover teaching in all fields of rheumatology, specifically related to inflammatory joint diseases.

About the full-time clinical position at Diakonhjemmet Hospital
The Division of Rheumatology and Research is one of five divisions at Diakonhjemmet Hospital. It encompasses the field of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, with a special focus on inflammatory joint diseases. The clinical and academic position will be within the specialty of rheumatology. The applicant is expected to take part in clinical work in the Division, including educational activities (professionals, patients and their relatives), as well as research activities. The clinical research has an overall aim to improve patient care with emphasis on diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive measures.
Qualification requirements – education and relevant personal qualities – for the clinical part of the position
- The applicant must be a board-certified rheumatologist, clinically active and have a broad clinical experience
- Norwegian health authorities demand a board certification issued in Norway in order to work as a rheumatologist in Norway; applicants without a Norwegian board certification must present in detail how they will get this in due time
- Experience in performance of national/international multicenter clinical trials that is a particular focus in the research strategy of the Division of Rheumatology and Research
- The clinical work within our department requires broad competences within the field of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, and we also expect clinical and scientific engagement in the development and assessment of specialized treatment on an international level
