Technician Science Department

Oslo International School (OIS) seeks a dedicated, organized, and collaborative Lab Technician to join our Science Department. In this role, you will provide integral support to our teachers and students, playing a key role in fostering a safe, engaging, and dynamic learning environment. As part of our dedicated Science Team, your work will be instrumental in driving innovative, hands-on scientific learning experiences and maintaining the safety and efficiency of our laboratory facilities.

 

This part-time position offers working hours from 8:00 AM until midday or early afternoon, Monday to Thursday, during the academic year.

 

Responsibilities

· Prepare resources, assemble apparatus, and carry out demonstrations for laboratory experiments, fostering a culture of innovative science learning.

· Provide technical advice to teachers, technicians, and students, facilitating collaboration and innovation within our school community.

· Carry out risk assessments for technician, teacher, and student activities, reinforcing our commitment to health and safety.

· Assist in practical classes, inspiring curiosity and innovative thinking among students.

· Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects.

· Maintain a healthy and safe working environment by actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring, and review of health and safety procedures and information resources.

·Support the Team Leader in ensuring the availability of suitable materials and equipment, compile orders, and liaise with suppliers and finance departments.

· Perform routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing, and repairing of equipment to the required standard.

 

Skills and Knowledge

· Aptitude for collaboration, flexibility, initiative, organization, and continual learning.

·Experience in risk assessments for technician, teacher, and student activities.

· Strong communication skills, with proficiency in English; familiarity with Norwegian scientific terms is an advantage.

· Digital skills with particular proficiency in spreadsheet use for tasks such as stock maintenance and cataloguing safety sheets.

·Experience in assembling science apparatus, preparing standard solutions, and caring for plants.

·Sound understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics principles (minimum, 16+ level).

·Knowledge in optimizing school laboratory safety, safely storing chemicals, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

·The ability to carry out small repairs on science equipment, such as microscopes, is an advantage.

 

Requirements

·Proven experience as a Lab Technician or similar role.

·Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and legal regulations.

·Experience in handling and caring for laboratory equipment and samples.

·Strong organizational and analytical skills.

·Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

·Attention to detail and a service-oriented mindset.

·Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and requirements.

·Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Norwegian would be an advantage.

 

Working Hours

This is a part-time position, with working hours from 8:00 AM until midday or early afternoon, Monday to Thursday. The exact working percentage will be finalized based on the academic calendar in the coming weeks. There may be some flexibility based on discussions with the appointed candidate, but the start time of 8:00 AM from Monday to Thursday is fixed.

 

This role follows the school’s academic calendar with respect to national and school holidays.
