Selling our Long Wheelbase Volkswagen T4 Caravelle.
2000 year model.
1.9 Turbo Diesel engine, 5-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive.
ABL engine code.
There are loads of pretty on the outside t4-s on finn but you will have to heavily invest in those to salvage them and make them reliable. Here that is out of the way. It was maintained and cared for while under our ownership.
Bought it as a family car and daily driver. The odometer was at 235.637 km. Now is at 269.000 km.
The first thing we did after we bought it was to take it to NAF for an inspection to assess the situation.
Started the restoration after that because this car, like most other "cheap" T4-s for sale are neglected and taken advantage of until they need a bigger investment. That is when they sell them. Was the same in our case when we bought it but we invested heavily in it. Our cost is somewhere around 140.000 nok or more at this point. Don't know exactly.
A list of things that were bought and fixed by me since I took ownership of the car. When I say "fixed" that means fixed properly! Down to tightening nuts and bolts to the correct newton meter torque specification. I also used copper paste on screws to make my life easier in the future.
Most of the parts are ordered from eurodel.no. Premium parts only. New. Not refurbished.
New Battery.
New wheel bearings in all wheels. Left, right, front & back.
New brake lines. All of them are changed!
New break force regulator.
New water pump.
New timing belt set changed at 235.832 km!
New top gasket cover.
Shifting mechanism cleaning.
New Bosch starter motor.
New stabilisator arms front left and right Lemforder.
Two new reinforced (thicker) springs in the back.
Break guards.
Handbreak wire (The part the goes from the interior and under the car. This I still haven't changed yet, because the handbrake is working fine I'm just very anal about things and would sleep better if that was also new).
Bilstein shocks in the front.
Bilstein shocks in the back.
Right mirror.
Windshield wipers.
License plate lights x2.
New bolts for the suspension plus cleaning the area. Rust protection.
Rust fix in certain locations.
New Clutch kit! (Mechanic said it had the original from the factory clutch still. Changed it because it sometimes slipped so now it is good for another 200.000 km +)
Right steering rack planetary bellows or whatever that is called in English.
Changed cylinder head gasket.
Engine gas breather.
Two new Bosch horns.
Some parts from the official vw classic parts store, like starter motor screws and rear shock rubber base because these were missing. Previous owner lowered it like you see in photos.
Mahle thermostat.
5w40 Castrol motor oil.
75w/90 Motul transmission oil and drain plug screws. Like I said. I'm pretty anal about things.
Swag coolant liquid.
Osram light bulbs.
New break calipers back left and right and new break pads.
Thermostat belt (This I also have to change because I see some wear not because something is not working, I'm just waiting for warmer days).
Air filter.
Kupefilter.
Meyle oil filter.
Fuel filter.
Engine guard.
Just to name a few. This is what I can recall from the top of my head plus all the small nuts and bolts that I don't mention.
Car comes with a DEFA warming system. With battery voltage monitoring, temperature, battery charging monitoring, pre-heating programming. Plug is on the front bumper. I bought a brand new cable for it.
Also has a powerful and very bright led light strip integrated into the front.
Bought the car 03.2022.
Last EU kontroll was done 09.09.2022.
Next one is due on 12.10.2024.
Engine oil change was done at 262.184 km. (Next one should be at 272.000 km)
Transmission oil change was done also. (Next is at 292.000 km)
The wife and kids love the van. It is a very versatile UTILITY vehicle. I use it as my daily driver, 40 sometimes 80 km a day in total. It is a great camping car, a great car if you need to carry trash to BIR or move furniture or go shopping to Monter. We also did two round road trips through Europe with it already. To my surprise is loves sitting at 140 km/h on the highway. The car never gave us any issues, and never left us stranded. The repairs I've done are more for my peace of mind. If it was up to me I'd change every bolt to a new one. :) I can't stand rattles.
Love the high seating position. You sit higher that most of people in traffic. A Tesla Model X (that we owned before the Caravelle) sits lower for example. All the windows, brightness, the utility of it. Once you go minibus it is hard to go back.

Altho it had a few owners before me the car's interior is in good condition, but there are signs of wear and neglect from previous owners, for example, the sliding door cover, because one of the previous owners broke some clips that were holding the cover and "fixed" it by putting in some wood blocks behind the cover and held it in place with some wood screws. Savages! As of today, the cover is off. I cleaned the locking mechanisms and lubricated them with WD40. It is an ongoing project. I love that it is so simple. Parts are cheap. You can work on it yourself.
With all that said this car is currently 23 years old. There will always be something to wrench on to tune or adjust but the car runs great and is reliable. There is rust obviously here and there but the guys at fixbil said only the usual typical body elements have issues the frame/structure is in good condition. I got an estimate of around 8000-9000 nok to fix the rust issues but these are optional / not urgent. The exterior also has bumps and wear marks. This brings me to another positive about this car. When you leave it in a parking lot, you are not worried it they hit it accidentally like with an expensive luxury car. Trust me I know, I've been there.
There are lots of VW T4-s on finn for sale. For a much lower price but like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. It might look nice on the exterior but you don't know any service history, you don't know what bolts and nuts are rusted and welded over time that turn a 1-hour job into 7 hours or days and so on. If you want a good copy, a looked after, a honestly fixed up car that is mechanically in very good condition, a reliable car and don't mind some of the aesthetical wear and tear. This is your car. Not lowered. Not cut and modded.
License place is LH91140. Long Haul (porsche) 911 that can fit 40 people :P
This would be a great choice if you plan on building a camper or something.
I custom made the wood dashboard myself and installed the ATOTO head unit and microphone and reverse camera. Now the car is "smart" :) Android auto, Apple car play, Bluetooth and wifi connectivity to name a few features.
It will serve you well if you take care of it.
