Beskrivelse
After 2 great years of sailing with the Guy in Drammensfjorden and Oslofjord, it is time for us to sell her and buy a bigger one. We bought her in April 2021 and have done a lot of improving, upgrading and servicing since then. As of today, the boat is in fully working condition and should not require any serious maintenance or service for another year. The size makes the mooring very affordable, which is especially important in the Oslo area. Despite the age, the boat is very steady, robust and reliable, and “forgives” many amateur mistakes. You will neither beat speed records nor cross the Atlantic, but will have a lot of fun and excitement exploring the Norwegian coastline. All in all, it is an excellent starting pack for someone who wants to try sailing without investing too much time and money. Please feel free to drop me a message if you are wondering about something or want to arrange a meeting.
Little info about Guy 22:
In 1976, it was an ambitious attempt from the designer Guy-Christer Lönngren to fit a whole family of four into a 22ft sailboat together with a kitchen and a toilet, still keeping the boat fast and maneuverable despite the small size. As a result, there are 4 full-length sleeping beds inside, a kitchen space and a toilet under the navigation table. Surprisingly, it is even possible to stand fully upright inside (at least for someone up to 1.80m like me). The small size makes it super-easy to operate in tight marinas, in many cases one can simply turn and pull the boat with bare hands.
What has been done in our ownership:
- Summer 2021 - moored at a small private marina in Tangen, Drammen.
- Winter 2021/22 - stored on land at Nordre Jarlsberg brygge, Sande.
- Summer 2022 - currently at a private moorage next to Oksval marina, Nesoddtangen.
Engine
The original Mercury engine did not last long after we bought the boat, so we had to replace it with a 5hp Honda. Oiled and checked in May 2022, the engine works like a clock, starting with 1-2 pulls. The engine is more than sufficient for this size, even on a windy/wavy day. It comes with 2 plastic bensin tanks (12L + 5L), and the consumption is very low.
Antifouling
We had the boat lifted in October 2021 and did the full service below the water line in April 2022 (sanding + epoxy priming + 2 coatings of antifouling). Also, the rudder was reinforced with epoxy and fiberglass. The boat should not need any lifting for another year.
Sails and ropes
The boat is equipped with 3 winches, all the lines lead to the cockpit, making it safe and super-easy to sail even single-handed. We have replaced some of the old lines and there are also a lot of extra ropes of all sizes.
- Mainsail is quite old, we had it professionally patched in May 2022, and it should last for several more years.
- Gib was replaced several years ago by a previous owner, also installing a Plastimo furling system. Made by Elvstrøm Sails, it is in a good condition and has many more years of service.
- Spinnaker is old but in a good condition due to little use, many more years of service. It comes with a spinnaker pole.
Kitchen and toilet
All the pipes and pumps are in fully working condition. The toilet is a usual Jabsco-style marine toilet and uses sea water. In the kitchen we use a 10L plastic tank to supply fresh water using a foot pump, which is usually enough for a weekend. There are also facilities to install a larger water tank and fill it from the bow using a hose (a previous owner had it installed, but then removed). There is a double stove for cooking (comes with an unopened 4L bottle of rødsprit) and some basic utensils & cutlery.
Electric system
We have completely re-wired the electric system with a new panel, cables, and an audio system. It can play radio, USB and Bluetooth. There are 4 working speakers (2 inside + 2 outside). All the lights are working. There is a simple Garmin navigator with sea charts installed. There are also several free spots to plug in some other 12v electric equipment into the panel. The whole system is powered by a 12v battery which we usually charge once in a month.
Safety on-board
We installed a new guard rail wire in June 2021. There are 3 throwable rescue ropes and 4 life jackets. The engine comes with a safety cut-off switch. There are 8 fenders of various sizes and a telescopic boat hook.
Anchoring, docking and mooring
There is a 10kg Bruce-type anchor with a 20m line. In October 2021, we bought steel supports (støtter) for winter storage on land (see pictures). They come with the boat (currently stored in Drammen and can be picked/delivered when needed). A private mooring next to Oksval marina paid until 31 December 2022 is also included in the price. It should not be a problem to extend the contract for 2023. I usually come to the boat from Aker Brygge by ferry and then cycle for 5mins, making it just 30 mins in total. There is also a parking lot 50m away from the boat.
