Henry John Livens was a direct descendant of Jan Liebens of Holland. Jan Liebens left to go to London to paint the portrait of the King, some time in the 1600's. He stayed there, and the talent was passed on each generation. At some time the name was slightly changed to Livens.
Henry John Livens was a British 19th century specialist in still life painting and landcapes. This picture is a good example of his work.
He is recorded as having been born in London and he continued to live in London and Watford until moving to Winchcombe in Gloucestershire circa 1911.
