In January of 1854, Silas Noble and James P. Cooley started making drums in the Noble farmhouse kitchen. Their design was an immediate success. In a few weeks they moved into a small building and, after two years, built their first factory.
During the Civil War, the company boomed making drums for the Northern Regiments. At this time, many changes occurred with expansion to a larger factory and change from water power to steam engine, all influencing the continued growth of the company.
Granville, Noble & Cooley's home, is a typical small New England village in the foothills of the Berkshires. The business is still owned and operated by the descendants of James P. Cooley and retains the original firm name. Through the years, improvements in buildings and manufacturing processes have been made, but the company has retained much of its antiquity and charm.
Today, Noble & Cooley continues the tradition of making "the world's best drums", from solid ply snare drums to CD Maple drum sets, as well as the recently reintroduced Horizon series drums.
The Horizon line of snare drums was designed to compliment the Horizon drum kits. These snares are built of the same shell ply as the kits, and offer many of the same design features.
Noble & Cooley is a custom drum shop and make their drums to order, not to fulfill any particular marketing niche or price point. These are pro-level drums and so they use nothing but the finest in materials and workmanship. They are a research driven company. What that means is that each drum they make has been painstakingly designed to provide the best sound possible.
Noble & Cooley has found a simple, transparent solution to the common and bothersome problem of drum detuning. The lugs are fitted with delrin inserts that create a cold form around the inherent thread imperfections of any given tension rod. This effectively locks the tension rod in place virtually eliminating the usual drum detuning that stick impact creates.
Noble & Cooley researched the impact of venting. They found that multiple venting holes, placed correctly, made a difference not only in the sound of the drum, but also in the feel. Symmetrical venting lends the drum a more consistent rebound at various locations on the head. They also placed the vent holes in line with any other holes that need to be drilled in the shell (lug mounting, e.g.). This reduces the inhibiting effect that drilling has on shell vibration. In a nod to aesthetics (and looking good always counts!), we designed our lugs in such a way that allows the vent holes to be completely out of sight.
The Horizon series drums sets feature a unique horizontal ply design and offer a sound distinct from conventional ply drums. The horizontal plys create a strong attack which is balanced with an inner veneer of Mahogany that adds warmth to the tone. The result is a clarity of sound which cuts through the music yet remains musical and vibrant.
To complement the new kits, we are also introducing Horizon Snares in popular sizes previously unavailable in our wood offerings! The snares feature the same construction techniques as the drum sets, providing yet another option in the Noble & Cooley Snare drum line. The horizontal layup of these snares closely emulates the responsiveness of the Solid Shell Classics and has a brightness that falls in between wood and metal drums. They make excellent primary snare drums and can serve as other options for drummers who already own Noble & Cooley snares.
