The "Thin Skin" series was extremely limited, and the first run was only available from 2007-2008 from three select Fender dealers in the USA. Very few examples were produced in each custom color, and by many accounts fewer than 50 instruments were made in each finish. Truly the best American Vintage reissues Fender has ever offered, this Jaguar sports a "Thin Skin" C.A.R. nitro lacquer finish (eschewing the poly base coat seen on other American Vintage examples) along with other notable features including a 9.5" modern Fender fretboard radius, 6105 fretwire, and matching headstock. The guitar weighs 9lbs 6oz.
This guitar delivers plenty of Fender sparkle and twang, with a lively, full natural acoustic tone. The chrome "claws" that surround the pickups are also unique to the Jaguar, focusing the magnetic fields of the pickups and also providing extra shielding against unwanted single coil hum. The Jaguar was Fender's top of the line instrument when introduced in 1962, and it's one of the more feature-rich guitars ever offered by the Fender company. Both Lead and Rhythm circuits have individual Volume and Tone controls, with an extra bass cut switch on the Lead circuit for even more thinned out tic-tac tones.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with particularly round shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .905" at the 12th. On the slab rosewood fretboard, the frets are practically perfect, and the slightly increased height and crown of the 6105 fretwire (compared to vintage wire) lends itself to effortless bending and longer fret life. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1.650" in width, and the matching C.A.R. peghead retains its Fender Jaguar waterslide decal over the lacquer, along with Gotoh, Kluson-style tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The guitar retains its original "Limited Edition" neck plate with LE-prefix serial.
The vibrato tailpiece works extremely well for surfy shimmies or deeper dives in concert with the stock bridge, and the flip-up string mute also functions as intended.
The C.A.R. "Thin Skin" gloss nitro lacquer finish exhibits some small finish chip on the body edge (watch the pics) and a few light finish scratches and microscopic marks on the body as a whole. The ambered gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
The Thin Skin series was exclusively offered by a few premier dealers. They were top notch variations of the already excellent American Vintage reissues and sported some cool upgrades. Thin nitro lacquer finishes, big frets and special pickups were offered. This one has all the right details. The body is alder for snappy tone and light weight. The 24 inch scale maple neck features a 9.5 inch radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 6105 frets. Two special design American Vintage Jaguar single coils dish out retro tone. Jag vibrato, adjustable bridge and Kluson style tuners keep it rock solid. The finish is a gorgeous Thin Skin nitro lacquer Candy Apple Red. This finish is just like the expensive Custom Shop instruments and replicates the look and feel of the original vintage guitar. The Thin Skin models are perhaps the best Jaguars you can buy.
This is a great playing and sounding Jag. The 60s C shaped neck is very comfortable and the 6105 frets make for easy bends. A great feeling and sounding guitar. This is a very nice used guitar. It shows only the lightest signs of playwear. It shows a little finish flaw. This is a killer guitar with awesome vibe. A regular American Vintage Jaguar won't give you the upgraded features or cool Thin Skin finish which gives a better sound. Here's an even better looking and sounding performer.
The guitar is available to be tested in Trondheim
