Cream T Custom 59 - Humbucker pickups
Item description
Til salgs er et sett Cream T Custom '59 humbucker pickups. Handmade in Norway, av Thomas Nilsen.
So, in went Thomas Nilsen's Cream T Custom '61 pickups
measuring 8.25K1bridge and 7.09K1neck. What's that tell
you? Well, if you've been paying attention, you know that the best sounding PAFs and vintage patent sticker pickups
we have tested in "the neck position were those with a lower
resistance reading. Coincidence? Not likely. The Cream T
neck pickup possesses a very woody, big box tone played
clean, clear on the top with a solid bottom that doesn't sound
muffled or mushy. Cranked, it's a bluesy, shambling beast,
powerful and bold with excellent treble presence and snap on
the top three strings, and a fat and bassy, rollicking tone on
the wound strings that is old man strong .
Like most exceptional PAF-inspired bridgepickups, this one would leave you guess-
ing were you to hear it in a blind test. Compared to more common
bridge humbuckers, the Cream T delivers a smooth yet penetrating
bright tone in the style of a great P90, anchored by slightly
richer midrange. The Cream T bridge is very well balanced,
but you'll find that the clarity and detail in the treble frequen-
cies far surpasses what you may be accustomed to in other
booteek pickups, and that clarity translates into a brilliantly
edgy, bluesy voice, and an equally superior tone with hard
driving amps, overdrive and distortion effects. Of course you
want comparisons... The Fralin Pure PAFs reviewed here are
ever so slightly cleaner sounding in the lighter and brighter
McCarty. The early '60s patent number Gibson hum buckers
in our Historic Goldtop reveal stronger, more vivid harmonic
overtones on the treble strings that want to spill over into har-
monic feedback if you let the strings ring and sustain. That's
an unfair comparison, since we don't expect any modem pick-
up to nail the sound and attitude of the old patent numbers,
but neither can we promise that you would prefer the sound of
them over the Cream Ts. If anything, tone is indeed subjec-
tive, on the other hand, doing nothing is a lose/lose proposi-
tion. In the end, 'Questing forth' requires faith in the idea that
trying something new is always a better option than doing
nothing at all, and we can happily assure you that Thomas
Nilsen is absolutely on to something uniquely fine and very
special with his Cream T pickups. Count them among the very
best 'replica PAFs' we have ever reviewed. Next month: the
Cream T P90 meets Blondie Junior. Look out. .. 1b
