Sannsynligvis den aller første bok som i detalj omtaler Tørrfluefiske etter sjøørret i Aurlandselven ?!
Anthony Buxton: Sport in Peace and War. Published by: Arthur L. Humphreys, London, 1920. 1st edition. Small 8vo (132 x 195mm). viii + 120 printed pages. Title-page printed in red and black. Not illustrated. Red cloth, upper board and spine titled in black. Spine faded. Clean interior, just a few age related spots. Very Good + condition. - - - Trout fishing, game shooting, galloping after hare and partridge and pigsticking on the Western Front. The author also recalls sea trout fishing in Norway along with some natural history and bird watching. "These chapters, some of which have already appeared in print, were written partly in times of peace and partly in times of War. I feel some apology is needed for any further reference to that over-written subject, the War, but the book contains nothing whatever of military value or interest except the most convincing testimony that a good many members of his Majesty's forces, myself included, ought to have been court-martialled for spending a great deal more of our time in amusing ourselves than we were paid to do. I can only say in mitigation that those of us who were keen on sport succeeded in keeping up our spirits by making the best use of every opportunity in that direction, and that the higher our spirits were the better for all concerned." - - - Chapters include: Fishing in Northern France; Dry-fly fishing for sea trout [in Aurland, Norway]; The trout of the mill-pool; Galloping; A fox out hunting; Pig-sticking; Shooting; Birds on the Western Front; A second year's observations; More about sea trout. With a foreword by the author's father, E.N. Buxton. - - - Of the 120 pages, 52 are on fishing. - A very early and pioneering account of sea-trout fishing with the dry fly in the Norwegian river Aurland prior to the Great War. Two very instructive chapters on how to find the fish and how to present the fly. (I en artikkel av Per Ulrich Kristiansen om sjøørretfiske i Aurlandselva i tidsskriftet ”Jakt & fiske” nr. 7, 1994 (Årg. 123), nevnes bl.a. Anthony Buxton.) - - -
T. T. Phelps: Fishing Dreams. Published by Batchworth Press, London, 1949. 1st edition. 8vo (142 x 220mm). 242 pages. Colour frontispiece painting and colour plate of flies, b/w photograph plates, b/w line illustrations. Light blue cloth, spine titled in gilt. Very good copy without dust-wrapper.
“Wide-ranging angling essays, many of then based on the author's extensive experience on the River Laerdal/Lærdal in Norway. These include chapters on the Laerdal/Lærdal, its valley and salmon pools, fishing the prawn, greased line fishing, casting, gillies, and dry-fly-fishing for sea-trout. Away from Norway, he covers chalk stream fishing and management (principally on the Test, Itchen and Whitewater), pollution, the mayfly, grayling, dry fly and nymph fishing, and angling travels to Siam and Japan, Canada and Scotland. The author was a pioneer of dry-fly fishing for sea-trout, beginning with the method in 1902, and eventually using it almost exclusively when fishing for Norwegian sea-trout. It is interesting to note that he failed with it completely on a river in the west of Scotland, when a change to the wet fly brought an instant response.”
