We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer!
Who are we?
NEC OncoImmunity AS is an AI-driven biotech company, focused on vaccine development for cancer immunotherapy and infectious diseases. We build and apply machine learning models and bioinformatics tools for precision immune targeting.
Our growing international team consists of a diverse mix of data scientists, bioinformaticians, software engineers, immunologists, and cancer researchers. As part of the AI for drug discovery division of NEC Corporation, we are dedicated to developing scalable software solutions that facilitate effective immunotherapy and optimal target identification.
The roleWe are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the infectious disease team. This is a hands-on building role. The team has strong biology and bioinformatics expertise, and needs a dedicated ML engineer. Thats the role you will take.
You will set up the engineering scaffolding that the rest of the team builds on: structured data management, training pipelines, model infrastructure. You will also contribute directly to developing and benchmarking ML models for immune biology, working closely with our data scientists and bioinformaticians. Your work will shape the software stack being built. You will not be inheriting a rigid system, rather help designing a new one.
What you will work on:
Model infrastructure: Build and maintain training pipelines, experiment tracking, and model registries with strong reproducibility and traceability. Enable fast, reliable iteration across the team.
Data management: Build automated, structured systems for versioning and managing datasets, combining public and in-house experimental data.
Model development: Contribute to developing, benchmarking, and improving ML models for antigen presentation and T-cell activation.
Pipeline integration: Integrate models into our vaccine design pipeline, ensuring reliability and maintainability in production workflows.
ML lifecycle: Evaluate and introduce tools and practices that improve the speed, quality, and robustness of the ML workflow.
What we are looking for:
Strong programming ability. You can build systems from scratch and write clean, maintainable, and reliable code that others can build on. Degree in Computer Science, engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
ML fundamentals. You understand how to train, evaluate, and debug models. Experience with frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, or similar.
Data pipeline experience. You built and maintained data processing and training pipelines, with attention to structure, reproducibility, and usability.
Linux/CLI fluency. This is your default environment.
Effective with AI coding tools. You use claude code, cursor, or similar to move faster.
Gets things done. You are resourceful, pragmatic, and biased towards action.
Interest in the domain. Posses a genuine interest in learning about immunology and vaccine development, and how computational predictions connect to experimental validation.
Works well in interdisciplinary teams. You will collaborate closely and describe your work to bioinformaticians, immunologists, and data scientists.
Bonus
Experience in biotech, bioinformatics, immunology, or computational biology.
Familiarity with experiment tracking and model registry tools (MLflow, DVC, Weights & Biases, or similar).
A real opportunity to shape how ML infrastructure is built in a team that is yet at a formative stage.
Work that translates directly to vaccine development for diseases with important unmet clinical needs.
A highly international and interdisciplinary team (16 countries and counting).
Generous budget for compute and AI coding tools.
Learning budget for conferences and professional development.
Bonus scheme based on performance evaluation.
Flexible working hours in a hybrid setting (on-site in Oslo).
Negotiable salary based on experience.
Competitive pension scheme (7% of salary).
Complimentary treatment insurance.
