Senior R&D Engineer - Energetics

Interwell P&A is currently seeking a Senior R&D Engineer in Energetics.

This is a unique opportunity to join a focused development team with high expertise and a multidisciplinary approach.

Interwells RockSolid™ is a groundbreaking new technology for the decommissioning of oil and gas wells. An energetic material is delivered via a container to a specified depth in the well, where it is then activated. At a temperature exceeding 3500ºC, it melts the entire cross-section of the well, creating a permanent gas-tight barrier. This technology saves the industry significant resources while reducing environmental emissions.

Main Activities & Responsibilities:

• Lead development of thermite compositions and systems from concept to field-ready solutions

• Own scaling strategy for large-volume thermite deployments

• Perform thermochemical modelling, reaction analysis, and experimental validation

• Define product requirements and ensure alignment with system-level performance targets

• Translate reaction physics into design criteria, test programs, and acceptance thresholds

• Support prototype development, field trials, and commercialization activities

• Lead technical risk assessments (FMECA, HAZID/HAZOP where relevant)

• Provide technical authority on energetics to internal stakeholders and external partners (e.g. operators, regulators)

• Translate complex technical behavior into clear, defensible engineering narratives

• Contribute to IP generation (patents, proprietary formulations, processes)
  

Experience, Qualifications and Skills

• MSc or PhD in Energetic Materials, Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical / Aerospace Engineering

• 5–10+ years experience in industrial R&D or product development

• Demonstrated experience scaling technologies from lab to field application

• Strong understanding of reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, and material behavior under extreme conditions

• Experience working with hazardous materials and safety-critical systems

Desireable

• Experience with thermite or similar energetic systems

• Knowledge of regulatory frameworks for energetics/explosives

• High technical ownership and accountability

• Solution-oriented with bias toward experimentation and execution over theory

• Able to operate effectively across disciplines (chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering)

• Communicates complex concepts with clarity and precision

• Comfortable working in fast-paced, commercially driven R&D environments
