"The Hercules type is a historical series of French coins originally designed and engraved in 1795 by Augustin Dupré. It became one of the most widely reused iconographic motifs in French coinage. The obverse typically shows Hercules, wearing the Nemean lion’s skin and wielding a club, flanked by allegorical figures representing the Republic (with a Phrygian cap) and Justice; early issues bore the motto Union et Force, later replaced by Liberté-Égalité-Fraternité after 1848. The reverse displays the coin’s denomination within a wreath of oak and olive branches, along with the date, mint marks, and the legend République française. The first emission in 1796 (An IV) was a 5-franc silver piece under the new metric system. This Hercules design continued to be adapted through the French Republics and was later revived in modern commemorative issues."
