Jawaharlal Nehru, as the first Prime Minister of India, took a keen interest in the design and issuance of independent India's postage stamps. He viewed them not just as utility items, but as reflections of a nation's culture, history, and aspirations. He insisted that the stamps of independent India should be "attractive to look at and distinctive in character" moving away from the colonial-era focus on the "image of the emperor". He encouraged officials to seek the help of eminent artists for designing them.
