Senior Technical Lead - New Product Development & Emerging Technologies
Define what’s next for your career with Oceaneering.
Oceaneering is a global technology leader delivering engineered solutions and advanced systems that operate in the world’s most demanding environments. Our future competitiveness depends on our ability to identify, mature, and industrialize new technologies that create long term, enterprise wide differentiation. This role sits at the center of that mission.
Position Summary and Location
The Senior Technical Lead – New Product Development & Emerging Technologies is a senior individual contributor role with enterprise level technical accountability. You will shape, lead, and derisk complex innovation initiatives, from early-stage opportunity framing through development, qualification, and delivery, ensuring technical excellence, reliability, and strategic alignment.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, you will influence product direction across projects and portfolios, mentor technical leaders, and serve as a trusted authority in navigating ambiguity, technical risk, and tradeoffs. Success in this role is defined by impact at scale: reusable platforms, accelerated learning, and technologies that endure beyond a single project or customer.
In this role you will have close collaboration with our global New Product Technologies teams.
The role includes ability to travel domestically and overseas.
Duties and Responsibilities
This role exists to ensure Oceaneering consistently converts early-stage innovation into robust, reliable, and scalable solutions—while making the right technical and strategic decisions under uncertainty.
EnterpriseLevel Technical Leadership
Provide expert level technical leadership across multiple new product and emerging technology initiatives, often operating where requirements, architectures, or business models are not yet fully defined.
Act as a senior technical authority in fuzzy front-end projects, framing problems, defining technical strategy, and guiding teams through uncertainty and risk.
Influence technology roadmaps and platform strategies to maximize reuse, scalability, and long-term value across business units.
Concept Development and Validation
Lead the creation, evaluation, and maturation of concepts, architectures, and prototypes, ensuring disciplined experimentation, learning, and decision making.
Translate customer, market, and operational needs—working closely with Product Management, Design, and Engineering—into clear technical directions and success criteria.
Drive early trade studies, feasibility assessments, and technology readiness evaluations to support informed investment decisions.
Development, Delivery, and Reliability
Maintain technical ownership through development and delivery phases, ensuring fidelity to concept intent while managing technical risk, interfaces, and complexity.
Partner closely with Testing, Reliability, Quality, and Systems Engineering to embed reliability, safety, and lifecycle considerations from the earliest stages.
Ensure alignment with Oceaneering’s Product Engineering Lifecycle and New Product Development Frameworks, applying rigor without slowing innovation.
Influence, Mentorship, and Culture
Mentor and coach the overall technical teams, raising technical standards and decision quality across the organization.
Influence stakeholders at multiple levels through clear technical reasoning, structured communication, and credibility earned through expertise.
Model and reinforce Oceaneering’s Core Values and Critical Behaviors, particularly accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
As a successful candidate you are recognized as a technical expert who thrives in complexity and ambiguity. You combine deep engineering judgment with systems level thinking and are trusted to make decisions that balance innovation, risk, and long-term value. You naturally influence others through expertise rather than authority.
Required
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
Extensive experience leading complex new product development or advanced technology initiatives in safety critical or high reliability environments.
Demonstrated ability to operate at an expert / Subject Matter Expert level, shaping technical direction across projects rather than executing predefined solutions.
Strong systems thinking and experience integrating customer, technical, and business considerations.
Proven track record of influencing cross functional and senior stakeholders.
Desired
Master’s degree or equivalent advanced technical experience.
Experience with enterprise or platform level technology development rather than single project solutions.
Background in subsea, robotics, aerospace, defense, energy, or similarly regulated industries.
Deep familiarity with reliability engineering, technology readiness, and lifecycle management.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
Expert level problem framing and decision making under uncertainty.
Ability to simplify complexity and communicate technical risk clearly to diverse audiences.
High personal accountability and strong ownership mindset.
Demonstrated commitment to technical excellence, safety, and ethical engineering practice.
