Sr. Automation Engineer - Control System R&D
Do you want to play a key role in keeping everything running smoothly in Neuver Maritime?
At Neuver Maritime, our mission is to ensure Safe and Efficient Maneuvering at Sea. With a legacy dating back to 1953 and the esteemed histories of Tenfjord, Frydenbo, Rolls-Royce, and Kongsberg, we bring unparalleled expertise to the maritime industry.
From our facilities in Norway and strategic locations worldwide, we ensure we are always close to our customers. We are establishing a robust service and support network to provide unparalleled support wherever our customers operate.
We are among the market leaders, delivering high-quality steering gear and rudders, developed in the harsh, icy conditions of the North Sea. Our units sail on over 14,000 vessels globally, underscoring our commitment to quality, safety, and reliability. With a lifecycle focus, we ensure continuous support throughout the vessel’s lifetime.
At Neuver Maritime, you’ll find a supportive and dynamic work environment with great colleagues, a fun and inclusive atmosphere, and ample opportunities for personal and professional development
We are looking for a Senior Automation Engineer to strengthen our Control System R&D team. In this role, you will take technical ownership of automation and control solutions for our rudder steering gears. From modelling and architecture to PLC implementation and real‑world validation.
As a senior member of the team, you will influence technology choices, set engineering better practices, and mentor junior engineers. This is a hands‑on role, where your experience and judgement directly impact mission‑critical equipment used across +14000 vessels.
What you’ll work on
Develop the automation and control of our steering gear products and implement the logic on CODESYS-based PLCs
Shape the early‑phase design of new features and digital services such as performance monitoring, diagnostics, and secure remote access
Plan and execute verification on hardware‑in‑the‑loop platforms, ensuring precise and reliable control performance
Collaborate closely with software, hydraulics/mechanics, and electrical engineering teams to develop integrated system solutions
Contribute to the evolution of our control architecture, design philosophy, and engineering methods
What we’re looking for
Strong team collaborator with clear and open communication in English and Norwegian
Engineering degree in Automation, Cybernetics, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar
5+ years (or strong equivalent experience) working with automation, motion control, or safety‑critical control systems
Practical experience with PLC programming (CODESYS is a strong plus)
Comfortable working with hardware, like valves, sensors, actuators, test rigs etc.
Ability to take ownership of technical areas, make informed engineering decisions, and document solutions clearly
Nice to have
Experience with maritime systems, class requirements, or certification processes
Ability to interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics and reason about system behavior
Familiarity with redundancy design, separation principles, or steering gear regulations
Experience with model-based development (MATLAB/Simulink or similar)
Personal qualities that fit well here
You collaborate well with others
You can work independently with clear goals
You take a systematic but pragmatic approach
You have a commercial-oriented mindset and care about the customer and other system stakeholders
You are eager to learn and keep your skills sharp
Why join us
Direct influence on a mission critical equipment used on 14000+ vessels
Work that mixes modelling, implementation, testing, and field validation
A small, forward-leaning R&D team where engineers shape the system and see results quickly
Great colleagues and a positive work culture with opportunities for learning and growth
Opportunity to work from Brattvåg, Ålesund, or Hagavik, with Brattvåg as the main R&D lab (some commuting is expected)
