About the position
NVI has a permanent position open for a co-worker with competence in the field of fish pathology diagnostics and research.
New and evolving diseases continue to spread and threaten fish health, adding to an already complex fish disease situation in Norway. To identify health threats and target the most important causes of disease, this complexity needs to be resolved via a variety of approaches. NVI has a long history of using traditional pathology and histopathology, as central elements of disease characterization. We now combine these disciplines with new molecular in situ methods, digitalization and machine learning. NVI will thereby remain at the forefront of diagnostic innovation and disease research as a national and international reference laboratory for animal disease preparedness and research.
The position will be localized at NVI office in Bergen, Marineholmen: a research cluster housing many of our important collaborators in the aquatic sector.

What does the job involve?
The successful candidate will participate in disease diagnostic studies related to the preparedness, research and reference tasks of NVI. This may include some travelling to disease outbreaks for clinical investigations and sampling. Central to this position is responsibility for follow up of suspected emerging diseases of both farmed and wild fish. Initial characterization of pathobiology, controlled experiments and development of relevant new methods will be among your important tasks.
Also, research project design, acquisition of external funding and project coordination will be important elements of the position, as will publication of results and raising of awareness around important issues.
Our sections activity is rooted in the basic disciplines of pathology and microbiology and development of relevant methods. Cooperation with specialized laboratories within the NVI system in the fields of molecular biology, virology, immunology, toxicology and with relevant external expert groups will be expected.
What qualifications are important for this position?
You must:
be a veterinarian or fish health biologist
have a PhD in a salmonid desease
have oral and written communication skills in English at an international scientific level, or in a Scandinavian language
have a valid driver’s licence
To fulfil the responsibilities of the position, the successful candidate is expected to acquire sufficient Norwegian language skills within a reasonable time.
We also value:
documented broad experience from disease diagnostics and disease research projects, preferably including the pathobiology of emerging diseases of different fish species
organized, lead or participated in expert teams that may include international partners supervised at higher educational levels in aquatic medicine subjects.
competency in histopathology of aquatic species
knowledge of disease challenges in both natural (wild-feral) and farmed fish populations.

The position is remunerated in accordance with the Norwegian Government’s salary regulations and will be classified as Researcher (position code 1109 or 1110), depending on qualifications. Salary placement will be determined based on experience and competence.
